This is Jan Berry's biography. The book chronicles Jan Berry’s career as a songwriter and arranger—and his tenure as producer for Jan & Dean and other acts—with day-by-day entries detailing recording sessions, single and album releases, concerts and appearances, film and television projects, behind-the-scenes business and legal matters, chart positions and more. Extensive commentary from Berry’s family, friends and colleagues is included. Studio invoices, contract details, tape box notes, copyright information and other particulars shed light on how music was made in the Hollywood studio system of the 1960s.

If you're a fan of the Wrecking Crew, this book is for you.

Also included is biographical information, plus full details of Jan's 1966 automobile accident and his return to the studio one year later.

The book is largely based on extensive primary source documentation, but it is fleshed out by commentary from various family members, colleagues, and friends. Many of these people are listed below (but there are also quotes from various others, and information from others in summary form).

It did take too long, but unfortunately I was never able to work full-time on it. Too much other stuff going on.

I guess that's the way it should be. Jan & Dean could only work on music part time so it makes sense that Jan Berry's historian could only work part time on the book. lol just kidding. I'm so excited that it finally got done. Thank you Mark for your hard work. By the way, love the cover and also love the fact that Brian Wilson is doing the forward.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, here is how the book is presented:

A detailed biographical Prologue sets the stage.

The main part of the book covers the period from 1958 through 1969.

A lengthy Epilogue covers the period from 1970 through 2004.

I wanted a rare image of J&D together in the studio, and Dean was kind enough to license it to the publisher. I don't know the specific session, but it's 1966, and they're wearing their Batman pendants. I don't know who the girls are, but I'm sure Dean would be able to tell us.

I think Jan is wearing the Batman pendant in this video, three days before the accident. Could he have been wearing it when he had the accident?

Dean clarified the photo a bit. He said they visited Capitol Records' studio (their first time there, to the best of his recollection). He said the girls were daughters and a friend of one of the engineers (whose name he can't remember).

Fascinating.

It is sad that so much of the early sixties ws just not photographed. Nowadays everything is but back then it seems as though it was just not considered worth documenting recording sessions etc. I understand the contract complications too but consider how few photos there are of Jan and Brian Wilson together - and as far as I know - none in the studio together.

Great photo Mark and thanks

Me again! A real coup that you have Brian Wilson to do the introduction. Counting down the days.

Me again - sorry!

Just wanted to say that the You Tube trailer is brilliant. Some incredible audio. It would be great to have some of the studio work and backing tracks released - and in such clean sound. I can only think of something similar to the Hang 50 DVD / CD set that included the Ride the Wild Surf sessions. Any thoughts Mark?
