Count me out. I ve never been a fan of this original album. Liberty could have put out an album of all the songs and added alternative version of jan and dean songs us fans want to hear. Ie you really know how to hurt a guy.

are you kidding? This is a new release in 2017! I am very excited! Yes, in the end, it's the great productions 63-66 and early singles that I listen to the most. But I can't wait for this new release. The way they meant it to be released.
Hopefully, down the road, I can also get the vinyl for this one.

It was December 1965. Jan was joking about himself as the "cripple," as he still had his leg in a cast from the severe injury he received in the train accident four months earlier.

I have been waiting for a proper release of Filet of Soul since I first found out that side four of the Anthology album was edited from the rejected tapes - and that was forty something years ago :)

I understand that Jan submitted two different versions to Liberty. I assume that this is the longer first version.

The above was a quote from someone that just heard the trailer of Filet of Soul on Youtube.
I love this quote. Pretty much my feelings too. Can't wait for the CD to come in

That youtube comment made my day, and yes, I couldn't agree more. I'm so thrilled that labels still see J&D music as viable for release. Maybe this was inspired by The Beatles and Beach Boys box sets...?

Us Jan and Dean fans really need a good quality box set. Wheres the record companies who can get a release. This new release could have  been part of it, its a shame Jan never got to see the release, along with carnival of sound.

I'm sure Mark will correct me if I'm wrong but, if I remember correctly, Dean owns / has possession of the Filet of Soul mastertapes and so this release comes more or less directly via him. In which case it has no bearing at all on the possibility of a box set made up from masters primarily owned by Screen Gems.

This is Dean arranging for the public appearance (at long last) of something he has always wanted released, as evidenced by the fact that he put about half of it on side four of the Anthology album without any explanation at all. (Which puzzled me, and I'm sure many other people, no end at the time Anthology was released!)

Cheers

Technically, the Filet of Soul tracks in Dean's possession are Screen Gems masters.

By contract, everything Jan recorded and produced (or wrote) was owned by the company, including alternate takes, outtakes, and unreleased material. All such material is now owned by Universal (previously EMI Capitol).

When I was writing the book, Dean told me that United Artists (the successor to Screen Gems in the early '70s) did not want the tapes back after he compiled "Side Four" for Anthology in '71. Dean said that's why he kept the tapes.

There was a story previously that he got the discarded tapes out of the trash.

As far as I know, there were no such tracks with sound collage-type overdubs at EMI Capitol when I was doing my research. Universal does, however, still have all of the source material from the two concerts recorded at the Hullabaloo nightclub in December 1965, onto which the sound effects were grafted.

I googled Filet of Soul. Of course, there's plenty of stuff about Jan and Dean's Live One album. I few inaccurate reviews. One guy said that it was just the unused tapes from Command Performance. lol
But I also found some groups named Filet of Soul. The most popular was from Wisconsin. They had a national release in 1969. The funny thing is their name was Attila and the Huns. But they changed their name to Filet of Soul in the late 60's. Could that be because of the Jan & Dean album?
