HAWAII
(Jan Berry - Jill Gibson)

Hawaii's got two or three of my good years

Hawaii
Is where I'm goin' from L.A.
Hawaii
Is the place I'd rather stay
The summer's vacation to the sea
I'll hop a plane that will fly just for me

Hawaii's got two or three of my good years

Hawaii
Is where I left my girlfriend
Hawaii
I'll find her at South Bend
Together the island we will see
Riding 'round on our new motorcycle

Hawaii's got two or three of my good years

I'll grab my surfboard, make it to the sand
Take the waves, no matter how I land
Following wherever they will lead me

Radios blarin', people do love how
KPOI's always playin' music now
Rock 'n Roll blastin' all around me

Hawaii
I'm headin' back to find my life
Hawaii
On our isle of paradise
In evening the sun will set
And we will sleep, then release, and we'll find peace

Hawaii's got two or three of my good years

Note: KPOI (a radio station in Honolulu) is pronounced like "kay-poy."

"Fan Tan" Lyrics
« Reply #1 on: February 26, 2010, 05:53:21 PM »
FAN TAN
(Jan Berry - Jill Gibson - Don Altfeld)

Fan Tan, Fan Tan, Tan Tan

Cruisin' Sunset's quite a trip
Whiskey's magic for the hip
But a strange thing I did find
Leaving trails of rainbow wrappers behind
I couldn't get her from my mind

Fan Tan in my hand
You understand I do prefer
Once you try it you will find
The original perfume flavor

Fan Tan, Fan Tan, Fan Tan

Picked her up in my Stingray
Brought her home with me to stay
Though I know it seems absurd
While the flavor lasts she won't say a word
And all I've ever heard her say

Fan Tan in my hand
You understand I do prefer
Once you try it you will find
The original perfume flavor

Fan Tan, Fan Tan, Fan Tan

How could love have been so wrong
When she hadn't known me long
Fan Tan never brought her down
But it's all she ever wanted around
And now I only think of her

Fan Tan in my hand
You understand I do prefer
Once you try it you will find
The original perfume flavor

Fan Tan, Fan Tan, Fan Tan, Fan Tan
Fan Tan, Fan Tan
Fan Tan, Fan Tan, Fan Tan
Fan Tan

"Louisiana Man" Lyrics
« Reply #2 on: February 26, 2010, 06:24:05 PM »

LOUISIANA MAN
(Doug Kershsaw)

At first (birth) mama papa called their little boy Ned
Raised him on the banks of a river bed
A houseboat tied to a big tall tree
A home for my papa and my mama and me

The clock strikes three papa jumps to his feet
Already mama’s cookin' papa somethin' to eat
At half past papa he’s a-ready to go
He jumps in his pirogue and he's down the bayou

He’s got fishin' lines strung up on the Looziana rivers
Try to catch a big fish for us to eat
He set the traps in the swamp catchin' anything he can
Try to make a livin', he’s a Looziana Man
Try to make a livin', he’s a Looziana Man

Muskrat hides hangin' by the dozens
Even got a lady mink, a muskrat’s cousin
Got ‘em out dryin' in the hot, hot sun
Tomorrow papa’s gonna turn ‘em into mon(ey)

Well they call mama Rita and my daddy Jack
Little baby brother on the floor that’s Mack
Fred and Lynn are the family twins*
Big brother Ed’s on the bayou fishin'

On the river floats papa’s great big boat
That’s how my papa goes into town
Takes every bit of a night and a day
And even takes place where the people stay**

I can hardly wait until tomorrow comes around
That’s the day my papa takes the furs to town
Papa promised me that I could go
Even let me see a cowboy show

I seen the cowboys and Indians for the first time then
I told my papa gotta go again
Papa said son we got lines to run
We’ll come back again 'cause there’s work to be done

He’s got fishin' lines strung up on the Looziana rivers
Try to catch a big fish for us to eat
He set the traps in the swamp catchin' anything he can
Try to make a livin', he’s a Looziana Man
Try to make a livin', he’s a Looziana Man

*Originally "bren(da) and Lin(da)"
** Originally "to even reach a place where people stay"

"Girl, You're Blowin' My Mind" Lyrics
« Reply #3 on: February 26, 2010, 06:45:36 PM »
GIRL, YOU'RE BLOWIN' MY MIND
(Jan Berry - Steve Gaines - Paul Freese)

Flusterations hang up the day
Troubles come my way
Hidden feelings darkness finds
Nighttime's one big grind
I'm blowin' my mind

I'm sacked out most of the day
I just can't make it no way
I'm nowhere till we make love baby
That's when I unwind
Girl, you're blowin' my mind

I see blazin' colors flashin' 'cross my ceilin'
I can't let go, this universe is reelin'
Now don't you dig the same thing that I'm feelin'?
Now don't you know the kind of glow I'm revealin'?

I'm walkin' 'round in a daze
I see the world through a haze
But when you're right here by my side
A different guy you'll find
Girl, you're blowin' my mind

I see blazin' colors flashin' 'cross my ceilin'
I can't let go, this universe is reelin'
Now don't you dig the same thing that I'm feelin'?
Now don't you know the kind of glow I'm revealin'?

I'm walkin' 'round in a daze
I see the world through a haze
But when you're right here by my side
A different guy you'll find
Girl, you're blowin' my mind

Girl, you're blowin' my mind

MULHOLLAND
(Jan Berry - Roger Christian)

Where the mountains reach up to the sky
Mulholland
High above all the lights
Waiting there for me

I'm goin' up tonight that's for sure
Mulholland
'Cause every day's such a drag
All day long I sleep

Ah, but every night I turn on
Mulholland
The air is clear, the past is near
And then it's time to leave

Oh no!

I feel wasted all day long
Mulholland
The nothing hours, how they drag
Till the nighttime comes 'round

Now the sun's all right but I dig the night
Mulholland
My mind is free, there's more to see
Than any place I know

So for tonight, till it's light
Mulholland
A place for me, where I will be
Spending all my time

Mulholland

(Spoken by two guys -- including Jan Berry -- and a girl)

Have you been to Mulholland before?
No, have you?
Hey, who are you? How'd you get in my car?
I don't go in your car.
Hey get outta my car.
Where's that girl I was with?
Right here, baby.
Oh, come over here.
Who is it, a guy?
Wait a second, it's my turn now.
You already had it, man. Gimme a break.
Hey wait a second, baby.
Come on.
Get your hands off of her, man.
Hey wait.
You can't do this.
Yes we can, man. Come on.
What are you guys laughing about?
Hey, this is the police. I'm gonna bust all you people.
The police?
Oh no, no. We can't stop.
Aaahhh!
Hurry up.
Jan, get your hands off me. You got the wrong one, man.
No sir, I don't.
We don't.
I don't know why, or who, or how.
But we did it, and that's important.
Hey, somebody's got my underpants
Oh no, it isn't. No, it isn't.
No sir-ree, that's my baby.
Yes sir. You know me, baby.
It's not that, Don.
Ahh!

"Tijuana" Lyrics
« Reply #5 on: February 26, 2010, 07:47:49 PM »
TIJUANA
(Jan Berry - Roger Christian - Don Altfeld)

It's the little old lady from Tijuana

(Ay! Ay!)

The little old lady from Tijuana
She knows how but she don't wanna
If you ever see her around
She'll pick you up and she'll put you down

Everybody knows that there's nobody stronger
Than the little old lady from Tijuana
She'll curl your nose and she'll pull your hair
She's the terror of everyone that is a square

It's the little old lady from Tijuana

(Ay! Ay!)

Everybody wonders what she's got in her pot now
You can bet your hauraches that it's worth a lot now
She's got a bunch of bananas that'll blow your mind
Two for a nickel and one for a dime

And everybody knows that there's nobody stronger
Than the little old lady from Tijuana
She'll curl your nose and she'll pull your hair
She's the terror of everyone that is a square

It's the little old lady from Tijuana

She's got a mule drawn cart that's really a groove now
If the cops try to stop her she can really move now
She whips a little hay on her ass
Man this chick is really a gas

And everybody knows that there's nobody stronger
Than the little old lady from Tijuana
She'll curl your nose and she'll pull your hair
She's the terror of everyone that is a square

It's the little old lady from Tijuana

Go granny, go granny, go granny, go

"Carnival of Sound" Lyrics
« Reply #6 on: February 26, 2010, 08:13:54 PM »
CARNIVAL OF SOUND
(Jan Berry - Roger Christian - David Weiss)

Life can have a higher meaning
In a Carnival of Sound
Release the thoughts inside your mind
Seek the truth, it's there to find

Search yourself, analyze
Thoughts just can't be compromised
Deepest meanings can be found
In a Carnival of Sound

Release yourself from thoughts of anger
In the Carnival of Sound
Peace of mind's not hard to find
If you'll only look around

You can see far above
If you look through eyes of love
Eternal wisdom's destined goal
Can be found inside your soul

Life can have a higher meaning
In a Carnival of Sound
Release the thoughts inside your mind
Seek the truth, it's there to find

Search yourself, analyze
Thoughts just can't be compromised
Deepest meanings can be found
In a Carnival of Sound

La-La La La La La La
Release yourself from thoughts of anger
In the Carnival of Sound

In the Carnival of Sound
In the Carnival of Sound

You can see far above
If you just look through eyes of love

Carnival of Sound
The Carnival of Sound

LAUREL & HARDY
(Jan Berry - Roger Christian)

Laurel and Hardy where are you?
Stan and Ollie we love you

In a world grown complicated
It comes as quite a surprise
That a couple of simple people
Are still masters in our eyes

Many times you've seen them laughing
Spreading joy for all to see
Mister Laurel, Mister Hardy
I'll tell you what they mean to me

Roller coasters on the rainbow
Running on like endless time
With Stan and Ollie in the front
And Maharishi back behind

Years have passed and they're still here
With a smile that time can't void
And laughter rings throughout the world
For their art preserved on celluloid

In a world filled with confusion
I just want to go back when
Life was filled with simple pleasures
Will they come again?

They were born to put the world on
Slapstick clowning fancy free
Mister Laurel, Mister Hardy
I'll tell you what they mean to me

Roller coasters on the rainbow
Reaching far across the sky
Mister Laurel and Mister Hardy
Never really said goodbye

Many times I've seen them laughing
Many times they've made me cry
And I know they keep folks happy
In that laugh-in in the sky

(Spoken)

OLLIE: What are you trying to do? Can't you stay awake without getting into mischief?

STAN: Well I can't stay awake if I've got nothing to occupy my mind.

OLLIE: I'll give you something to occupy your mind.

"I Know My Mind" Lyrics
« Reply #8 on: February 26, 2010, 08:54:56 PM »
I KNOW MY MIND
(Jan Berry - Roger Christian)

Today I Know my mind
I haven't any fear
And I can see for miles and miles
My destination's clear

Now I can see my life
Unfolding before me
And so I will start my trip
In search of love and life that's free

Today I know my mind
I haven't any fear
And I can see for miles and miles
My destination's clear

The meaning of my life
Was cloudy yesterday
But now that my, my eyes can see
I know that I can find the way

I know my mind
And yesterday is past
Gone with tomorrow's dreams
And plans that could not last

I have the right
To stay here or to leave
To live my life
To seek and to believe

Today I Know my mind
I haven't any fear
And I can see for miles and miles
My destination's clear

Now I can see my life
Unfolding before me
And this hour of my life
It seems like an eternity

Today I know my mind

"Love & Hate" Lyrics
« Reply #9 on: February 26, 2010, 09:11:12 PM »
LOVE & HATE
(Jan Berry - Jill Gibson - Jan Hirsch)

Hate
Hate, Hate
Hate
Hate, Hate, Hate

Love is here to stay
And hearts are open wide
Happiness breaks down
The lonely walls inside

So stay awhile with me
Oh loves come late
When you let hate
Build a place to hide

Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate
Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate
Hate, Hate, Hate

Love
Love

Hate
Hate

Up and down
And all around

Love and be free
Don't waste your love silently
Silently
Silently

Hate
Hate, Hate
Hate
Hate, Hate, Hate

Love is here for you
Just take the time to ride
High above the fears
You've buried deep inside

So stay awhile with me
Oh loves come late
When you let hate
Put your heart aside

Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate
Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate
Hate, Hate, Hate

Love
Love

Hate
Hate

Up and down
And all around

Love and be free
Don't waste your love silently
Silently
Silently

Silently

"Stay" Lyrics
« Reply #10 on: February 26, 2010, 09:30:23 PM »
STAY
(Maurice Williams)

Stay
Ah, just a little bit longer
Please
Please, Please, Please, Please
Tell me where you're goin' to

Now your daddy don't mind
And your mommy don't mind

We have a lotta dancin', yeah
Just a-one more
One more time

Oh won't you stay
Just a little bit longer
Please let me hear
You say you will
Say you will

Won't you place your sweet lips on mine
Won't you say you love me
All of the time

Oh whoa-whoa yeah, just a little bit longer
Please
Please, Please, Please, Please
Tell me where you're goin' to

Come on, come on, come on, and stay, yeah!

Come on, come on, come on, stay, yeah!

"Only A Boy" Lyrics
« Reply #11 on: February 26, 2010, 09:47:11 PM »
ONLY A BOY
(Jan Berry - Don Altfeld - Fred Wieder)

Only last June
He got his diploma
In just a short while
Trainin' in Oklahoma

Learnin' to shoot
To salute, shine a boot
Takin' orders, fixin' mortars
Guardin' our boarders

He was only a boy
But had a man's job to do
Willing to die
For me, for you

Set sail for Vietnam
To help out our nation
Tryin' to put down
The Red infiltration

Fightin' in trenches
Out in drenches and stenches
Shootin' headlong
At a throng of Viet Cong

He was only a boy
But had a man's job to do
Willing to die
Not just for me, but for you

He thought about his folks
He sure missed his girl
As bullets and shells
Around him started to swirl

One ripped through his shirt
Blood spurt, man it hurt
He spun around, fell face down
Head to the ground

He was only a boy
But had a man's job to do
Willing to die
For me, for you

Ah, so his parents got a medal
So his girl got his ring
But to his country he left
One very special thing

He helped people stay free
From the misery of tyranny
Yeah he died without fright
In a fight that he knew was right

He was only a boy
But had a man's job to do
Willing to die
Not just for me, but for you

"In the Still of the Night" Lyrics
« Reply #12 on: February 26, 2010, 10:30:40 PM »
IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT
(Fred Parris)

In the still of the night
Darlin' I held you
Held you tight

'Cause I love, love you so
Promise I'll never let you go
In the still of the night

I remember that night in May
The stars were bright up above
I'll hope and I'll pray
To keep your precious love

Before the light
Hold me again with all of your might
In the still of the night

(Spoken by Davy Jones of the Monkees)

"I know you're gonna think its really funny
For me to be singing like this
But I've never sung before
And I felt the best way to tell you the way I feel
Is in a song
Because I've been told that songs really are univeral
And really, what I really want to tell you
It's not a song
It's that I wanna tell you that I love you
And I think we can spend our lives together
And if we both try I think we'll be able to make it
Because I really love you"

Before the light
Hold me again with all of your might
In the still of the night

In the still of the night

"Yakety Yak" Lyrics
« Reply #13 on: February 26, 2010, 10:49:10 PM »

YAKETY YAK
(Jerry Leiber - Mike Stoller)

Take out the papers and the trash
Or you don't get no spending cash
If you don't scrub that kitchen floor
You ain't gonna rock 'n roll no more

Yakety Yak
Don't talk back

Just finish cleanin' up your room
Let's see that dust fly with that broom
Get all that garbage out of sight
Or you don't go out Friday night

Yakety Yak
Don't talk back

You just put on your coat and hat
And walk yourself to the laundromat
And when you finish doin' that
Bring in the dog and put out the cat

Yakety Yak
Don't talk back

Yakety Yak
Don't talk back

Don't you give me no dirty looks
Your father's hip he knows what cooks
Just tell your hoodlum friends outside
You ain't got time to take a ride

Yakety Yak
Don't talk back

Yakety Yak

Mark thank you so much for putting the lyrics up. Despite constant listening I'd still got some wrong. I used to try and transcribe Jan and Dean lyrics - but the surf and car terminology often made it difficult.
We have often complained about Jan not being given the credit and historical status for his work. I think Roger Christian was another casualty. His car lyrics were brilliant. There is very little about him on the web. Is there anywhere we can find more biographical information about him?
