CARNIVAL OF SOUND / Re: Beach Boys Fan Site
« on: March 23, 2010, 02:08:04 PM »

I consider myself a huge Beach Boys fan...
and that has never stopped me from appreciating Jan & Dean and all the fine recordings that they have done over the years.

"Tijuana" is a classic example of what makes Jan & Dean so great... a throwaway yes.. but so much fun!
 ;D ;D ;D

Jan's version  of Filet of Soul  would be great... complete Stereo version of SFARD would be great too!

not their finest hour as performers...

but yes indeed, as emcees they really did a good job

The original thing has been bootlegged.

Never seen that boot, Mark,  how about a track breakdown of Jan's "Filet Of Soul"?

Owen, that collection was called "Summer means Fun" and was released in '82 on cbs records.
It was mostly  Bruce Johnston or Bruce and Terry based tunes with three exceptions, Dean's  "Like a Summer Rain " stereo mix,
Johnny River's take on "Help Me Ronda" (spelled that way!)  and Flash Cadillac's version of "Pipeline".

decent and somewhat obscure collection... high lights for me was Dean's track and a Rip Chord (Bruce) track named "Beach Girl" that was otherwise unknown to me..

Owen, If you have never heard the stereo version of the song, you owe it to yourself to do so...

The Silver summer version is indeed excellent, but the original stereo version ( less intrusive sound effects) is real good too!

Great interview it was... wish it had been 5 or 6 hours longer!   ( so much to say, so little time)

He did a real good job with that didn't he?

Sadly, if you try to recreate a complete stereo version of  SFARD,  it 's just a touch too polished to fit properly... and my vinyl copy of the original is rather noisy.   :-[

ahh The Silver Summer version... that was nicely done....

So the original stereo mix is lost I guess unless someone can track it down at Sony, and I wouldn't think that it's a priority for anyone involved.  shame, as that stereo mix of was one of the highlights (imho) of Dean's SFARD.

was "Like a Summer rain" on this comp mono or the stereo mix?

so I guess when Dean gathered the tapes to give to Sundazed, he didn't have the tape for "Like Summer Rain (stereo)" because CBS had already taken it for that compilation.  ergo, I guess the master for that track is hiding somewhere in the Sony vaults....? :P

"The Beat Goes On label" remasters as good as the "One Way Label" ones?

Here is a couple of questions for the 'in the know' members of the board...

Does anyone know why the stereo version of this tune wasn't included in the otherwise great sundazed "Save for a Rainy Day" reissue?
That song being missing was my biggest disappointment  in an otherwise great reissue.

The only copy of this version of this track I've found is on the CBS Columbia 2lp set "Summer Means Fun" c2 38069.
Does anyone know of a reissue that has this on CD?
