Dean Torrence’s The Teammates: Twenty Years Of Making Music 1965-1985 is available now and is a curated collection that traverses the decades of the various musical teams Torrence has captained. Whether it was in the producer’s chair, behind the microphone, or putting together musical entities, Dean has done it all. This collection includes many of Dean’s rare collaborations with the likes of Mike Love, Jan Berry, Bruce Johnston, Harry Nilsson, and Leon Russell.

“Dean has always been a really upbeat, positive, fun-seeking, and joy-projecting person on stage. He’s always about pleasing the audience, and I’ve always been very sympathetic to that as well. I think we had a commonality in our philosophy in performing and having a good time.” — Mike Love

Teaming with The Beach Boys/Jan & Dean historian David Beard (also editor/publisher of Endless Summer Quarterly), Torrence raided his vaults and discovered previously unreleased recordings from 1965–1985. Beginning with the ultra-rare single “Summertime, Summertime” by Our Gang (never available on CD), this collection is a treasure trove of rarities and previously unheard music. There are alternate recordings by Jan & Dean, never before heard music from 1973 by Terry Melcher, Bruce Johnston, and Torrence, and a slew of rare tracks by Mike Love & Torrence from the early ’80s that have never been made available on CD or digitally until now!

Omnivore Recordings is proud to continue its association with Dean Torrence on this exciting and rare compilation of historical music from one of the early progenitors of rock ’n’ roll. The Teammates: Twenty Years Of Making Music 1965-1985 also offers liner notes by Dean Torrence and an extensive Q&A with Dean conducted by Beach Boys/Jan & Dean historian, David Beard on the album’s contents and a forward by longtime Jan & Dean associate, and entertainment executive Winston Simone.

“It was important to us that we offer the fan something different and special, and Dean dug right in. This collection is about friendship, buddies... teammates. This was a true team effort.” — David Beard

Jan can be heard on "Thanks For Buyin' Our Album," and was featured in the television commercials marketing the release in 1985.

It would have already happened if he was interested.

What about smoking weed? Listening to Filet Of Soul sure makes it seem like they may have hahaha. I'm not surprised Dean hasn't done acid. SFRD and COS, to me, prove that J&D could have made it during the psychedelic era.

That's what I meant by he never partook.  Dean does not speak down about drug use, but maintains he did not smoke pot … didn't want to.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: Filet of Soul Liner Notes

My CD just came in. I love it!! Filet of Soul is a great album! The liner notes were good but I'm not sure how accurate some of that is. Dean mentions the Popsicle thing again where he remixes the song. But there is no evidence that he did. David Beard does a great job on his section. But he does sort of imply that Brian Wilson just gave a completed Surf City to Jan and Dean. And then the producer credits has
Producer: Jan Berry
Co-Producer: Dean Torrence
Is that how the credits would have read on the album?
I'm not saying it's not true. Hell, I don't know. I'm just asking.

Glad you love FOS as much as I do.

First and foremost, questioning Dean's firsthand account is not something I'm comfortable doing.   Dean was there.  I was not.  Mark was not.  We don't need documentation to listen to the friendship on FOS; it's palpable.  These guys are having fun.

The notes I wrote state that Brian provided Jan & Dean with a string of hit records.  There is no implication of the state of "Surf City" when Brian offered the song to the duo.  The purpose of my notes were to give a newbie fan an overview of how Jan and Dean went from a doo-wop group to producing a comedy album.

The credits listed for the FOS Redux release are a direct  reflection of the "in-studio" mixing that took place.  Dean was very involved in the complete deconstruction and sabotage of FOS in late 1965/early 1966.   I have an actual "Popsicle" 45 single that has Dean's Sharpie starred B-side (so DJ's would play that side instead of "Norwegian Wood") in its original Liberty envelope.

In my opinion, Mark's book research, my research, and Dean's firsthand account align very well.

The most important fact is this: I finally convinced Dean to release FOS in its entirety.  And he did it for all of us.

Dean did not/has not ever taken LSD, and has also stated he never partook.

The cripple joke appears in the shorter (2nd) version.  The released version is the acetate that Dean hand-delivered.

There is only one book listed on Amazon.  It is not Dean's book.

I have no idea how that book can say that.  Someone is clearly taking liberties.

I am not involved in Dean's book.  I was not there, and did not experience Dean's life.  I think — not sure — that he is doing it solo.
