DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Jan & Dean in HBO's "Vinyl"
« on: July 15, 2016, 07:38:11 AM »
I've been watching the HBO series "Vinyl" which is set in the '70s but frequently flashes back to the '60s during the episodes. A flashback in the episode I watched last night featured a minute or so of "Surf City" with two actors portraying Jan and Dean performing the song. It was the original track with the actors lip-synching. It was pretty cool and totally unexpected.

Please do not let this thread turn into a discussion on the R&R Hall of Fame itself.  There has already been heated debate on that subject in other threads.

I just wanted to share that I caught a portion of the telecast of the recent induction ceremony and Jan & Dean were mentioned.  While inducting the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chris Rock said something to the effect of "when you think of the quintessential California sound, you think of groups like the Mamas and Papas, Jan & Dean and the Beach Boys."

It was really cool to hear them get mentioned, especially as equals with those other two groups.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / J&D and the other Liberty artists
« on: April 11, 2012, 10:30:30 AM »
Does anyone know what kind of relationship (if any) that Jan and/or Dean had with the other major artists on the Liberty label?  Folks like Bobby Vee, Julie London, Martin Denny, Ross "David Seville" Bagdasarian, Johnny Mann, Si Zentner, etc.

Due to its size, I've always wondered whether or not the Liberty label mates were a close knit group (like, for example the early years of A&M and Motown) but have never seen or heard any discussion around it.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Japanese Reissues coming in May!
« on: April 11, 2012, 09:52:38 AM »
Amazon has new listings for the following CDs with a release date of May 29, 2012.  They appear to be Japanese reissues of the original Liberty albums:

Jan & Dean Take Linda Surfin'
Surf City
Drag City
Little Old Lady From Pasadena
Dead Man's Curve
Ride The Wild Surf

The label is listed as EMI but is probably EMI-Toshiba, which controls all of the EMI/Capitol catalog in Japan.  This is really exciting.  I have a bunch of the Julie London (another Liberty artist) reissues they have put out over they years and they are fantastic.  The remastered sound is incredible, original Liberty label artwork on the disc, beautiful reproduction of all the original album art plus full lyrics to all the songs.  If these J&D releases are anywhere near as nice as Julie's, they are a must have.  I have already pre-ordered them, sight unseen.

No indication yet whether they will be standard (jewel box) format or the "mini-LP" format which is popular over there.

Anyone have any other info on these?
