Hi Mark

I just wondered if you had an update on publication?

(Or any more details.)

(Or a sneak hint of what we might expect...)

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Hal Blaine
« on: November 05, 2014, 11:09:54 AM »
Haven't been back to Hal's website for a while http://www.halblaine.com

But well worth a visit. In the discography section you can look at different years with a lot of Jan and Dean tracks with Hal's notes. A few oddities - with notes against the wrong song - but well worth a read. As always, Hal is very complimentary about Jan's production and arrangement.

One example:

EVERYBODYS SOMEBODYS FOOL: (I've not heard of this track and am not sure if it is an error or a joke [Mark will know] ) but Hal notes: AIN'T IT THE TRUTH !! SOME OF US WERE REAL FOOLS!! ME AND EARL PALMER PLAYING DUAL IDENTICAL DRUM PARTS PLAYED THE %#$^ OUT OF JANS ARRANGEMENTS. JAN WAS ANOTHER BRIAN WILSON, HE KNEW WHAT HE WANTED AND HOW TO GET THERE.. GREAT FUN. SOMETIMES ALL NIGHT, SOMETIMES JUST A COUPLE OF HOURS, ALL AT WESTERN STUDIO 3 IN HOLLYWOOD, THE HITS STUDIO WHERE SO MANY NAME ARTISTS RECORDED WITH CHUCK BRITZ ON THE CONSOLE..

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Bruce Johnston
« on: July 26, 2014, 05:20:41 AM »
Went to see the Beach Boys in York last night. Met Bruce Johnston about an hour before the show - looking grumpy (him not me!) I shook his hand and said I was a Jan and Dean fan to which he replied 'not me!' - he wouldn't be drawn past this, Didn't seem to square with various interviews I've read. Has there been a fall out somewhere along the line? Ironically he then went on to sing Surf City. (No Little Old Lady this time!)
The show itself had a lot of archive footage cut to show Mike and Bruce as you would expect - quite a bit of Carl who sang God Only Knows on screen to the band's backing. Brian and All almost invisible.
It was sad that Bruce couldn't bring himself to say something nice. (Note I wasn't one of the people who had paid extra to meet the band and have their photo taken.) I just wondered quite what links there are between Jan and Dean and whether Dean's work with Al and David is a problem.
Mike and Dean worked closely together for some time!
Is this a case of never meet your idols> A bad night? Bad timing? Or something more? Any ideas?

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / TAMI Show conttact
« on: December 14, 2013, 02:30:45 AM »
I've only just seen this. Too late as usual. A fascinating find. I wonder how much Jan and Dean earned? A real collector's item. The contract for the TAMI show.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Sidney the Seasick Surfer
« on: August 05, 2013, 01:01:00 PM »
Hi All

Just seen this song on Youtube. I see it is from the Surf Scene pilot. Do we know anything else about it? Writers? I've never seen mention of it anywhere and indeed little mention of Surf Scene. Was this aired? Sorry to be so ignorant - and I call myself a Jan and Dean fan!!

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Beach Boys manuscripts for auction
« on: April 10, 2013, 07:10:12 AM »
www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/wouldnt-it-be-nice-to-buy-a-beach-boys-song-8537544.html

News of a big auction of Beach Boys manuscripts.

Is there ever a chance that some of Jan's writing / manuscripts / music etc will be up for sale? Mark I know that you have access to much of this material for the biography but I wondered if Gertie had any longer term plans for how it might be used / saved / displayed etc.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Little Old Lady et al
« on: December 19, 2012, 10:34:27 AM »
I understand that Jan was having issues with Liberty but I am still uncertain as to why he took his name off the writing credits of this and other songs. Also as he lost the court case why wasn't his name reinstated then?

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Best versions?
« on: October 23, 2012, 12:52:39 PM »
WE have written before about the problem of new listeners hearing the remakes rather than the original sixties recording but I want to pose another variant of the same problem. I was listening to the two CD version of Golden Hits (an odd compilation in itself as the sources are a strange mix!) These are of course the sixties originals but we have a number of different versions out there - mono and stereo obviously - but different mixes and edits. Most obviously Drag City, Surf City, I Found a Girl. I am not even talking about the remasters. These seem to be different mixes (sometimes quite subtle). I am thinking of creating yet another Jan and Dean mix and, if I had the time, I would like to select the best versions. Any thoughts?

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Gayle Caldwell
« on: September 05, 2012, 12:11:13 PM »
The brilliant footage 'Surfin' Safari' on Yu Tube (and in this board's You Tube section) and the Sidewalk Surfing clips from Where the Action is feature the beautiful Gayle Caldwell. Jan picks her up in the first and I just wondered if she was ever what I will quaintly call a 'love interest' for Jan?

Has anyone seen this book? There is a chapter on The Little Old Lady and just wondered???

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Roger Christian
« on: February 15, 2012, 03:43:01 AM »
Given that Roger Christian wrote the lyrics for many of the best hot rod songs for Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys there is hardly anything about him anywhere? Anyone know of a good source of info? Mark will he figure much in Jan's biography?

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Horace the Swingin' School Bus Driver
« on: January 28, 2012, 02:25:52 AM »
Listening to the Fantastic Baggys 'instrumental' Horace the Swingin' School Bus Driver (more like a demo background tape to me) it sound SO different from Jan and Dean's version that I guess Jan arranged and produced a completely different version. Did the FBs ever do a vocal version? The theme would suggest that it was written specifically for Jan and Dean and seems to have Jan's influence across the whole track.
Always one of  my favourite Jan arrangements. Great drumming.
