Three Window Coupe - I think it is good as any of the hit singles!

Mark raises a very interesting point about the credits, and one which suggests that they might not always be accurate. "Old Ladies Seldom Powershift" is credited to both Jan and Dean, but it is an instrumental. Which bit of it did Dean write then?

Several possibilities come to mind. Dean came up with the title, it made Jan laugh, he gave Dean a credit. Alternatively, Dean's contributions were real but scattered across the songs, and Jan credited him with the instrumental because he deserved some songwriting royalties from the album, so why not credit him with this one.

I raise the second possibility because Dean has suggested several places that the atmosphere was collegial, with people throwing in ideas and contributing in an ad hoc way. This might suggest that th credits were not always shared in a musically accurate way, but on a much looser basis.

Of course its always possible that Dean came up with the melody to the instrumental and Jan expanded upon it and it WAS a completely musically accurate credit. Maybe.

Mother Earth!

I wish that track was available legally somewhere, in a proper mix, not just on low quality bootlegs.

In some good news, or bad news, depending on how you see things: the package with the Jan & Dean book has already sold out!

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: Our favorite Jan & Dean songs

Hi,

I agree with Summer Means Fun, and I also agree that the vocals on the Legendary Masked Surfers' version are better than the original J&D version.

I have always liked As Easy As 1-2-3. Jill Gibson's vocals are perfect.

My favourite should-have-been-a-single song is 3 Window Coupe - which should have been a single  ;D I just love the vocal fadeout on that.

I find myself going back to Like A Summer Rain a lot - especially the version from Silver Summer. I know many people disparage that album for falsely masquerading as a J&D effort but, for me, Mike Love's suggestion that Dean re-record Like A Summer Rain makes it almost all worthwhile.

From the earlier songs I would pick Gas Money and Bucket-T.

Cheers

Jan made the re-recordings of his hits at the suggestion of Lou Adler, who advised him it's possible to license his own versions of the songs to companies looking to create new compilations.  I didn't like the idea and thought those recordings detracted from the album as well, but Jan was intent on having them be part of the project.

That makes perfect sense, I suppose. Or it would do if Jan had been able to resist fiddling with them. :)

With the extra lyrics and the new arrangements they sound much more like remakes than Dean's cover versions to me, and thus far less likely to be picked up by people wanting tracks for compilation albums.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: FILET OF SOUL RELEASE
« on: July 03, 2017, 10:47:44 AM »
I'm sure Mark will correct me if I'm wrong but, if I remember correctly, Dean owns / has possession of the Filet of Soul mastertapes and so this release comes more or less directly via him. In which case it has no bearing at all on the possibility of a box set made up from masters primarily owned by Screen Gems.

This is Dean arranging for the public appearance (at long last) of something he has always wanted released, as evidenced by the fact that he put about half of it on side four of the Anthology album without any explanation at all. (Which puzzled me, and I'm sure many other people, no end at the time Anthology was released!)

I have been waiting for a proper release of Filet of Soul since I first found out that side four of the Anthology album was edited from the rejected tapes - and that was forty something years ago :)

I understand that Jan submitted two different versions to Liberty. I assume that this is the longer first version.

Personally I would replace "Can't Wait to Love You" with "Easy as 123" and "Fan Tan" with "Three Window Coupe", which I think is oddly overlooked.

I think the entire 6 song Jan & Arnie career should be included. Also, a lot from early Jan & Dean. Those were very important songs to the development of California pop. They may have been top 100 nationally but they were top 10 in LA. Of Course, some were bigger nationally. The 60's stuff is a must. The 70's? I'd be satisfied with just a couple of songs. Maybe Sing Sang a Song and Fun City.

FWIW I think Mother Earth is the best single Jan made after the accident, so I would have to see that :)

I bought the orange CBS single in England when it first came out. It was being played on a number of the pirate ships at the time, which is how I found out that it was out.

I listened to this all the way through and the most interesting part for me was the point about 55 minutes in when they start talking about Filet of Soul and Dean says that he is talking with someone about putting the original version out with the artwork as originally intended.

I would be very happy to see and hear this at last :)

Mark, I remember a discussion here several years ago in which you suggested that Dean was interested in an official release for Filet of Soul - in approximately the form that it was originally presented to Liberty.

Do you know if this is still the case, and if any progress has been made with this? I for one would very much like to see Sundazed or someone release this because (as I said several years ago) I think it is a) funnay and b) ahead of its time. Its goofy surreal / stoned humour before Firesign Theatre even existed :)
