DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Studio 5
« on: Today at 04:09:50 AM »
Hi All
Studio 5 did so many of the Jan and Dean cover art - I wondered if there was an archive of their work - alternate takes etc.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Bryan Soland

Just found this. He sings the vocal parts of a number of Jan and Dean songs. Looks as though he "heard" the music rather than reading from a score. Interesting to see the breakdown.

I don't know if Mark is able to comment on the accuracy etc.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Apple Music lossless
« on: April 06, 2023, 02:53:29 AM »
Given that compression issues have been a factor as Jan and Dean were moved from vinyl to cd it is interesting that Apple seem to be converting their albums to lossless. I haven’t listened to much as yet but seems to reinstate something of a richer sound.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Mark’s certificate
« on: December 17, 2022, 08:13:07 AM »
Congratulations Mark on the recognition given to your biography of Jan
So well deserved. I’ve been an advocate for Jan from the late sixties when I first heard Jan and Dean on the radio. They were not played much in the uk and many of their albums weren’t released here. I had to import them myself. No internet / no Amazon then. I contributed a bit to Ripped Baggies although my name was always misspelled.
It took you though and your two brilliantly researched and written books to ensure Jan’s legacy.
Many, many thanks

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / DEan's latest compilation
« on: October 16, 2022, 10:42:07 AM »
Thanks for the update. Tried the link to the CD version - not working (at least in the UK). (I want to add the CD to my collection as well as having a digital version.)
Good news (if you have Apple Music) - it is there and I've downloaded it. Not listened to all but some new stuff.

More evidence that we need a Jan Berry anthology / collection. Dean Has David Beard punting for him I would guess.

Not sure if there are contractual complications in collecting Jan's solo stuff but it would be a great collection.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Displaying Jan and Dean
« on: September 04, 2022, 12:08:01 PM »
Over the years my Jan and Dean collection has grown and I decided a while ago that some of  it deserved to be displayed - the 45 pic sleeves, some rarer album covers, the programme and some sheet music. Some I have in individual frames but the 45s eps, a few photos and autographs are in a big frame. They look great. I was hoping to post a photo but I cannot reduce the memory's size of the picture enough to upload it.

Anyway, I wondered if anyone else had any of their collection displayed - and if so - how?

Pride of place awaits a Jan and Dean boxset if it ever arrives!

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Surf City YouTube

A great video of Jan and Dean singing Surf City on YouTube.

https://youtu.be/nFeUEfpN_yc

It is new to me. No idea what show it was on as the licensing arrangements are unclear to the untutored.

Quality good - the guys look good and, of course, don't take things too seriously.

I wonder if there are other clips yet to be shared? I haver never seen them singing Dead Man's Curve at the time of its release. That would be great. 8)

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Rock Dreams
« on: April 25, 2022, 07:50:53 AM »
Hi All

Has anyone else seen Guy Peeler's book Rock Dreams. It features his art on the Beatles, Dylan, the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean.

I have a copy of the book but see that on-line many of the pictures are available digitally - but not Jan and Dean. Anyone have a copy of the Jan and Dean pic digitally? My old book is looking rather tatty. I have no idea about copyright issues but so many of the other pages are out there.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Pray for Surf Interview
« on: April 03, 2022, 07:56:12 AM »
I really enjoyed the Park for Surf interviews. More than just an overview of the biography, an additional take o things.

I was especially intrigued by the "jan and anybody' sections.

Dean is a great guy, a talented artist, and his humour was integral to the Jan and Dean personna. That said, his 'audible' contribution to many of the best tracks is minimal or non existent. He has a distinctive voice - good and bad - and I can see why Jan sometimes wanted a purer falsetto. Listening to the Little Old Lady outtakes confirms this for me.

Jan's brilliance was in creating a rich studio sound instrumentally and vocally and my reading is that Dean wasn't always the right sound. I accept that Jan's voice too had some limits but multi tracking and writing songs for that range made him a stand out singer for me. His lead vocals were important in turning me on to their sound at the start. To find that he wrote, arranged and produced etc etc makes hime undoubtedly the one defining presence in the band. I was always disappointed that live and on TV, Jan did not bother (Is that too strong?) to replicate the studio sound.

For me, Jan and Dean on record are Jan and others (not anybody but a carefully chosen group of musicians). Reading Mark's books has strengthened this belief.

Thanks Mark

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / I Found a Girl
« on: February 13, 2022, 08:04:46 AM »
I Found a Girl is a strange one. When I first heard it, I was surprised that the track seemed quite 'muddy' compared with Jan's very "clean" productions. It has transpired over time that there are several mixes of the song. The UK release was not the same as the US. I first heard it on Folk n Roll - UK release - and this seems to have yet another take.
I was listening to the mon version on the Liberty singles album and the track is so much better. Remember Liberty put out the wrong Dead Mans Curve version on Golden Hits. Quality control was terrible.
If nothing else, the various versions of IFAG show that even at the end, disillusioned with the record label, Jan went over and above to get the sound he wanted. Just a shame there was no agreement of which version would hit the shops!

Happy new year everyone.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Etsy
« on: November 16, 2021, 12:46:57 AM »
Etsy are selling at ridiculous cost Jan and Dean 12 inch versions of Such a good night for dreaming - Palisades park, featuring vintage pin ups. They look terrible and a strange choice of songs. Does anyone know who is doing them and why?

Just came across this 1964 French band Les Kelton's recording of The New Girl in School.

Misses Jan's production but shows the basic quality of the song.

I can find little about the group (seems to have been short lived) or chart success in France.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Lossless audio
« on: June 15, 2021, 08:20:38 AM »
One of the minor themes in this message board over the years has been the way Jan and Dean's music has lost out as a result of compression issues on CDs and streaming. I had and still have almost all the vinyl albums and singles but inevitably I moved to CD and now most often listen when driving around using Apple music. (I have uploaded all my collection including the Collectors series that obviously did not have a commercial release.

The distinction between the rich and deep vinyl versions and the CDs etc is stark. Apple now have 'lossless' audio and I listened today to the Dead Man's Curve album using this. I wondered if anyone else had tried it?

It still doesn't match vinyl but I would say it improved the sound quality. Maybe it was wishful thinking - I hope not.

We were hoping for a digital version of Second Wave without the compression loss. Dare we hope that this will happen and that better still all Jan's productions will have a decent rerelease. Maybe a digital box set?
