Hey so I've been wondering what Jan's opinions were on the Anthology Album from 1971 and the Gotta Take That One Last Ride album from 1974? Was he consulted at all on track selection? I think Anthology is a nice overview though I think it kinda stinks that "You Really Know How to Hurt a Guy" and "I Found a Girl" are nowhere to be found, likely due to being too substantial for Dean, who for some reason I guess didn't like Jan moving further outside of the expected "Jan & Dean" sound perhaps?

And Gotta Take That One Last Ride just strikes me as a real oddity? Since it came out in 1974, is it possible it came out after The Beach Boys beloved Endless Summer album? It would kinda make sense to me if that were the case, with the track listing looking like it's a Jan and Dean "summer fun" album. Also, it is super odd that "Vegetables" is on both of the aforementioned albums. I kinda get why it's on Anthology cuz it showed with Dean had been up to (and also made for a chance to release the version of "Vegetables" with Brian Wilson and Spring), but why did it appear again on Gotta Take That One Last Ride? Odd.

Anyways, anybody know anything about all these albums? I'd love to hear if so. Thank you!

Also wondering myself why Jan can't get a proper solo anthology, one especially focusing on his '70s material.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm very happy to see this second Dean release, but I think Jan's work deserves another look. I'm glad Second Wave got reissued, though I'm not really a fan of that material, but I hope at some point somebody stands up for Jan and gets a company like Omnivore to put out a set.

So nobody knows if the 1975 "updated" version of "Sidewalk Surfin'" is available digitally anywhere? It was issued as Jan & Dean, but I guess Dean added overdubs to and remixed the 1964 master. Anybody?

Why didn't Jan get carnival of sounds released around the time Dean had  save for a rainy day, two great albums in opinion.

Hey so, anybody know if there's any chance Jan's '70s and '80s material may ever get a wider release? Like something a bit fancier than that Fun City from a few years ago? I mean, I'm glad it exists, but you can hear the vinyl crackling at some points and whatnot. It'd be cool if they could remaster the original tapes if they still exist.

Secondly, is the 1975 version of "Sidewalk Surfin'" that was spearheaded by Dean (but released as Jan & Dean) available digitally anywhere? Either download or CD? Cuz I feel like that one has fallen through the cracks. In fact, I'm not sure if I ever heard of it, or it's b-side, "Gonna Hustle You." Is it the same version of "Gonna Hustle You" as the version by the Legendary Masked Surfers?

One can easily find the original Jan & Dean version, which is good. You can also find the Silver Summer version pretty easily, while its pretty hard to find Jan's "Skateboard Surfin' U.S.A." is a bit harder to find through non bootleg means, besides the aforementioned Fun City compilation and of course the original single.

Hey everybody. So I have a question (or three)...

First, how many versions of Dean's "Summertime, Summertime" are out there? I know there is the version by Our Gang which features Gary Zekley on lead vocals (right?). And then there is the "Jan & Dean" version which was released as a single later on. This version released as Jan & Dean was reissued on the Dean Torrence Anthology right? That's the version I have. I also noticed that as the b-side of the Legendary Masked Surfers "Gonna Hustle You" single, once more appears "Summertime, Summertime". Which version is this one? And also, did Bruce Johnston or Terry Melcher add any vocals or anything to it? And lastly, I've seen there is what is listed as an "alternate version" on the All the Hits compilation. Does anybody know what this "alternate version" is? I'd assume it's Dean's single version or at least an alternate of that, since using the "Our Gang" version wouldn't seem to make much sense.

Then about "Vegetables". There was a discussion about it over on the Smiley Smile board, and I never got an exact answer. Anyways, does anybody know if the original 1967 version is available on CD? And also, is there anywhere to hear it online, as I've never heard it. I have "Vegetables" on  Dean's Anthology and the Jan & Dean Anthology Album. However, the version on the the Jan & Dean release is surely the 1971 version with vocal overdubs from Brian Wilson and Spring. And from listening to the version on Dean's solo compilation, it surely sounds like that is the same version, meaning I don't have a copy of the original 1967 version as issued by Laughing Gravy. So, if anybody would mind, could you explain the differences between the '67 version and the '71 version? And if it's possible, could anybody let me know if there is anywhere where I could get '67 Laughing Gravy version on CD? Thanks.

Lastly, does anybody know if the Legendary Masked Surfers version of "Summer Means Fun" is available on CD or other digital means? Same with Dean's re-recording/remix of "Sidewalk Surfin'" which released in '76 as Jan & Dean. Is that available anywhere?

Very good interview. Super informative.

His attitude is kinda shitty though, just in general. Kinda put Jan's last 30 years down in a way that I don't think he would if Jan was still alive.

I also think it's a shame he acted like he "couldn't be creative anymore" or whatever because of the "political or economic situation." So reading between the lines with that one, it sounds like he's more worried about protecting his money from taxes by President Obama. Kinda stupid if you ask me. He should be trying to have fun with life instead of acting like a cranky old fart.

Has Dean ever been questioned about why he allowed this material to come out as "Jan & Dean"?

As recently as last year, he did the artwork for that CD called Surf's  Up which is pretty much just a reissue of Silver Summer. And by doing the artwork, it seems like he has no problem with the fact that it's labeled as such.

And what's worse, this isn't a release that's just hanging around the internet. I actually saw this CD available at a nearby record store. They had no other "Jan & Dean" CDs but they had that one. Shame on Dean.

Sorry to dredge this old topic up, but I thought it was interesting. Does anybody know why, if Jan was so against Silver Summer, he would be in a commercial promoting the album? Just his sense of brotherhood with Dean maybe?

And as far as Jan on "Barbara Ann", I read that in the Passmore book, but I sure don't hear him on there.

Hey everybody, today I had the Fun City CD by Jan & Dean delivered. It's pretty nice. It's a CD-R that's manufactured on demand when one orders is it from Amazon, but it is in fact an official release. And it's cool to finally have great stuff like "Fun City" and "Little Queenie" finally out there on an official CD. I'm pretty sure it's vinyl sourced, but it's still pretty nice sounding. The package itself is pretty nice looking too.

I'd also like to mention how much that on "Blue Moon Shuffle" Jan really sounds like how Brian Wilson would sound around the 2000s. Kinda weird.

Hey, so I was reading Mark Thomas Passmore's book and Jan & Dean, and it makes it sound as though Jan didn't really have much of anything to do with the writing of "Hawaii" and "Fan Tan". I'm pretty sure he said "Hawaii" was music by Jill Gibson and basically lyrics by Roger Christian. And for "Fan Tan" he basically said that the music was by Don Altfeld and Jill Gibson with lyrics by Jan and Roger Christian. However, if Jan couldn't really communicate well, how did he contribute lyrics?

I'm hoping that there was true hands on involvement from Jan, because I really like those two songs, and I'd be disappointed his name was just on the credits to help him feel better.

And on a different issue, I know a backing track was recorded for "Girl, You're Blowing My Mind" before the accident, but anyways, were the melody and lyrics for the song conceived before or after the accident? Either way, it totally sounds like a hit, even today. It's a shame that one wasn't released back in '68.

So I was considering buying a copy of the Legendary Masked Surfers CD Jan & Dean's Golden Summer Days, but before getting it, I just wanted to be sure of what the songs on it actually are. Are they the 1977 re-recordings? Or what was gonna be soundtrack of the Dead Man's Curve movie? Or is it the Silver Summer album?
