The song set list for the Hullabaloo concert is in Mark A Mooreís book, The Jan&Dean Record, page 267. Would have loved to hear a live A Beginning To An End.

Iíve seen the Surf City shortened clip awhile ago, as well as many other rock bands, I think on Facebook. Itís supposedly from the Red Skelton Show. According to the dates they give on the artists, the J&D Surf City clip is from 1965. Thatís what I would have guessed also. Not sure why they picked a two year old song, but thatís fine. Itís great! Sure wish more appearances would show up. Iíd really like to see their Lloyd Thaxton Shows which most (I think) are in color.

How great would that be to hear the full live Hullabaloo concert with no editing or sound effects added. Just to hear A Beginning from An End would be worth the price of admission.

Iím a little more than half way through and itís very difficult to put down. The hard part, like your previous book, is when itís 1966, and it gets close to April. You kind of relive those days and wish there was another outcome. Why didnít Jan get more sleep, why didnít he do the speed limit and  why did the truck have to be parked there that day? Well, youíre finally at April 12th, and nothing has changed. The truck is parked on the street and Jan is driving faster than normal. Sure canít change history. Every time I pick up this book, Iím hoping for someone who will think what a great movie this would be. Jan & Dean deserve it.

I feel bad for Jan & Dean, seeing how they had to put up with that cover. No disrespect to the little girl, but Iím not sure if Dean had the authority to step in, he would have put a halt to it. Liberty and J&D were at odds against each other at that time. Being their last album, and not on good terms with the guys leaving, Liberty kind of gave it to them with this ridiculous cover.

Absolutely one of my favorite J&D songs. How this never made it on an album, Iíll never know. The instrumental in the middle with the oboes is classic! The police sirens fit perfectly in there. First time I heard this was on a 2 album collection called Legendary Masked Surfers Rarities. It was the last song on side 1 with the other songs from 1958-1962.

Canít wait to get this book. Nice looking cover. Love the picture of the 1963 Sebring Silver Corvette Sting Ray coupe, identical to what Jan drove. Now if we can only wish for a movie to come out based on this book!

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: J&Dís skateboard

That is a great photo. Thanks for posting it. Actually, if Keith Moon had been holding the skateboard, it would have been more logical. But we still would be wondering how he got one. Rest In Peace Wayne, and thanks for the music. As a side note, guitarist Eric Stewart was with Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders and took over lead vocals when Wayne left. Stewart eventually became a member of 10cc which was one of Deans favorite groups (according to a Sunshine Music fanzine article).

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / J&Dís skateboard
« on: August 07, 2020, 07:59:33 AM »
I received a notice on Facebook that musician Wayne Fontana of the Mindbenders passed away. The article was in The Sun, a British newspaper, August 7, 2020. Scrolling down to check out the pictures, I came across one of Wayne, holding of all things, a Jan and Dean Sidewalk Surfer. Not sure how he got his hands on one of these. But to see a J&D skateboard with a British rocker, I thought it was kind of odd. Actually, to see anybody with one of those boards has to be a rare sight. Any thoughts out there?

I bet Keith would have loved to sit in on the drums at a J&D concert for a few songs. And Iím sure the guys would be happy to let him. Same goes for The Beach Boys. He was a lover of surf music and left us way too soon.

Itís mind boggling how all these other groups got ahead of Jan & Dean. Even if youíre not a J&D fan, just look at the track record and accomplishments these two guys had  even while going to college. I canít figure it out. Whatís the reason for shutting these guys out? Anyone have any ideas?

I remember hearing this song years ago and knew right away that the melody was Horace the swinging school bus driver. Actually, I think I even own this 45 with the picture sleeve, but couldnít find it after a long search. I was curious about the song writing credits and to my surprise, with the help of the internet, the credit went to Dickerson, lead singer and guitarist. I like the Untamed Youth a lot and have been listening to them since the early Ď90ís. Deke Dickerson is a phenomenal guitar player and used a Fender Jaguar that was popular with early surf groups. Carl Wilson played one on the first 3 or 4 Beach Boy albums. The Untamed Youth also covered J&Dís Surfiní Hearse from the Drag City album. I have no idea why Dickerson is the only name listed on this 45. He only changed the lyrics. The music wasnít his. In the mean time, Iím going to try and track down the 45. Curious to see what the writers credit says.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: Jan's best album cut production
« on: November 07, 2019, 06:25:01 AM »
I totally agree with Hot Stocker. This is one of my top 5 songs of J&Dís. Great production. Listen how it starts with those horns blasting. One Piece Topless Bathing Suit and 3 Window Coupe are right up there. A rarely mentioned song, which was a b-side and never made it on an album, is Freeway Flyer. The background vocals are top notch and the Wrecking Crew are at their finest.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: Jan Berry Biography

Thanks for the update Mark. Iím sure weíre all anxious waiting for your book on Jan. Now if only some Hollywood producer sees it and wants to turn it into a decent motion picture. Iím sure a bio on Janís life would be quite interesting for all, especially with the latest flicks about Brian Wilson, Freddy Mercury and Elton John.

Youíre right Positivemusic. How can I forget Murry. Iím sure Brian would have done the right thing for Mike, but Uncle Murry wanted to keep it in the family, even if Mike was his nephew.
