Welcome to the new board . . .
At long last . . . Carnival of Sound will be officially released by Rhino Handmade in early 2010.
A 1 CD / 1 LP set . . . with plenty of bonus tracks and extensive liner notes.
Let's talk about it . . .

The project is in good hands — and it's coming along nicely. 8)

Cool,
CD and an LP sounds like a winner.
Thanks Mark for the update.
How many versions of "blowin my mind" can we expect???
Any Jan Berry banter on the extended cuts???
Is it all Mono???
Take Care Burton :)
-
Bonus tracks will include stereo mixes, and alternate takes.
-
Mark,
Does Dean have input on this project?
Like many fans I can't wait for this. I remember talking to other J&D fans about this like ten years ago. I heard like 5 or so years ago a label was looking at taking a shot at this project but it never happened. Right after the bootleg came out.
One more thing have you Mark heard the whole thing(CD & LP)? My opinion " blowin my mind " could've and should've been a hit!! I'd like to hear from anyone(on the forum) about this.

any idea when we will be getting any press info on the project? end of January? :)

Dean is contributing.
I've heard all the tracks, but haven't spun actual vinyl.
The stereo mixes alone are worth whatever the album costs. They really will "blow Your Mind."

Sounds about right . . .

I'm intrigued as to whether the album will feature some of the arrangements you used on the tribute album. The various bootleg versions I've heard don't. The tribute album featured some exciting and adventurous background harmonies. I Know My Mind especially.
Did the original album have any art work? I wasn't sure it ever got that far!
-

Totally ! Should've been a monster. Fantastic song. I just can't decide which version I like the best.... ::)
-
Can i get the Album in the Uk on vinyl as i ve got the save for a rainy day also on Vinyl Lp

Some of the Carnival vocal arrangements we used for the tribute album (like "I Know My Mind") were written out on paper by Jan and his team in 1967 and 1968 . . . but were ultimately not used.
Thus, they're unique, but still Jan Berry arrangements authentic to the original project . . . and they were too good to pass up when we were recording the tribute.

Mark, will the early version of "Lousiana man" be on this CD? The one that Dean overdubbed with a killer leadvocal? I think that version seriously kicks some mighty a$$
-
Really Looking forward to this. I know it will be great because Mark has been the #1 believer in preserving the Jan Berry legacy. I think my favorite through the years has been "Mulholland."
-
2010 is getting off to an excellent start. I'll be getting both the CD and vinyl. This is a dream come true.
-
It's a must-have. Dean designed the cover…
-
Hi Mark. Is there going to be a Japanese release of Carnival Of Sound? Hopefully a mini LP?
Thanks,
Michael

First things first. Let's let Rhino Handmade do its thing and get it out . . . and then we'll see where it goes from there.
-
I really hope that Rhino releases it soon. I got the "not official "version of this great album. That one sounds good. Cant imagine what i will hear when i listen to the "official "version !!!

Big difference in sound quality . . . and that's an understatement.
-
Very big difference in sound… The same way the Dennis Wilson Bambu had been bootlegged for years, but when it was released in 2008 there was no comparison.
-
For many years i ve been waiting for this, and i understand about bootlegs of artist and songs which never come out,A lot of people would buy them as this could be the only chance of hearing a song which may have been talked about and was left of an Album and left in the can,and yes the Quality would not be good in some cases,
Paul McCartney once said about the Beatles Anthology cd set, he was glad the track were finally released so the general public could get to listen to them,he said it was a waste when there kept in storage at the EMI studios,
In the past i got The bootleg version of carnival of sound as i really wanted to hear this Album, and i m now glad to get the official release, and can t wait
-
If the quality of the sound is anything like "Louisiana Man" on the Hang 50 CD I'll be more than happy! That song sounds better than I have ever heard it, and is all the better because of that. I'm really looking forward to the sound-quality as much as the track listing.
:) Mark
-
Saw a proof of the CD tray today . . . progress.
-

Basic track-wise, the foundation is there . . . but Jan's version for Carnival is markedly different from Dean's. Jan's version features brass and woodwinds.
-
I d lke to see the dean version in the final release, the version on the Jan and dean label,(louisiana man),
With the singles being released on warner and jan and dean records,i get confused which version is which, thats why i thought dean was singing on a few warner sessions,as i have the single here,(louisiana man/like a summer rain-jan and dean records 402)
Also On a version of Blowing my mind theres jan saying i m flying just before the third verse, and i also read he sang back up vocals,so i wonder rhino will use that version.
-
any release date yet :D I feel like a little kid waiting to get his xmas present ;)

Join the club ;)
Tonight I saw the final CD liner edits, which have been shipped.
So, as the old saying goes . . . It won't be as long as it has been.

Rhino Handmade has a snippet of "Tijuana" playing on their website http://www.rhino.com/handmade/HandmadePage/handmade-page , if you click on "upcoming" releases and then on "Surf's Up".
They also gave a hint in their latest newsletter offering the Monkees' "Birds + Bees" 3 CD set. So the release date seems to be only a couple of days off ...
-
Of all the songs to use for a teaser ::) . . .
-
WOWOW :o thats one of the best unreleased songs. I listened to this one yesterday and this quality.... i cant wait no more ....please release it NOW ! ;)
-
Of all the songs to use for a teaser ::) . . .
Right, but atleast we got an impression of the quality.
I can't wait to listen to the whole CD !!
-
Who's singing lead on that one?

Who's singing lead on that one?
The answer to your question is in the chronology section of the liner notes.
-
Click words "surfs up" in the "upcoming" section of the Rhino Hand Made site and you hear a snippet of "Tijuana." The sound quality is great.

Davy Jones's demo of Jan's "Laurel & Hardy" is included on the new Monkees box set . . . and the Monkees set and Carnival of Sound are pretty much coming out at the same time.
The producer in common? . . . Andrew Sandoval.
-
I'll be reviewing the Monkees set for Goldmine; it's being mailed to me this week. Also, check this out.
Check out this link for the cover of Carnival of Sound:

Andrew sportin' the goods . . . Ha!
It took Dean three days to hand letter the "Jan & Dean" text.
-
Oh man, that cover looks amazing. Thank you Dean!
-
Wow!! That is beautiful. Both Cd and vinyl copies for me, please.
-
Okay, it's officially out:

It looks fantastic. Think I might order two copies!
I assume, however, that the "not available in all countries" tag means they don't ship it to Europe? If so, how can we get copies? Not sure I can wait too long?
-
Does anyone know if this ships to the UK?
-
It costs just under $46 to post to the UK, thats the CD and p&p. Very expensive!
:) Mark
-
Bloody hell, thought it would have been a little cheaper then that,is it around £25 in the uk scooby
-
i am plugging the release on my BLOG :D Pitty its that expensive. That means i have to wait for it and buy it when released on Ebay ;D

It works out around £30 minus a few pence on current exchange rates. Really expensive!

I don't quite understand the comparisons of Save For A Rainy Day and Carnival Of Sound as if the two are somehow interlocked… They're not. I think it would be interesting to combine the material of the two albums -- which I'll do for fun --- and make my very own J&D 1968 album.
Jan & Dean album #1 — Save For A Rainy Day
Yellow Balloon (single version)
Girl You're BLowing My Mind
Like A Summer Rain (single version)
Raindrops
Pocket Full Of Rainbows
Louisiana Man (Dean's version with quacks)
California Lullaby

In The Still Of The Night
Yakety Yak
Stay
Summertime, Summertime
Jan & Dean album #2 — Carnival Of Sound
Carnival Of Sound
Vegetables
Hawaii
I Know My Mind
Laurel And Hardy
Mullholland
Love And Hate
Snowflakes On Laughing Gravy's Whiskers
Tijuana
Louisiana Man (Jan's version)

It's a shame Save A For A Rainy Day couldn't have been recorded in the big-studio system. That didn't happen, because Dean — not for lack of trying — wasn't allowed to record under Jan's Screen Gems account. So it was off to Joe's garage.
The Rainy Day masters on Sundazed suffer by comparison, fidelity-wise, to the new Carnival stuff on Rhino. A product of the recording process.
I love Save A For A Rainy Day , and can really imagine how much better it would sound had it been recorded in the "state of the art" of the era.
I've been listening to both albums a lot lately; and the more I listen to to Rainy Day, the more I appreciate it from a compositional and arrangement standpoint.
-
The ship date for Carnival of Sound is February 22.
-
Will the CD also be sold in stores?
Thanks,
Michael
-
> It's a shame Save A For A Rainy Day couldn't have been recorded in the big-studio system.
I completely agree. The single version of Yellow Balloon was re-recorded in a "proper" studio, andf it is much better than the album version - improved arrangement (the piano break in te middle) and improved sound.
If only the rest could have been through this process too!
I love Save For A Rainy day, but the single version of Yellow Balloon and the Silver Summer re-recording of Like A Summer Rain offer tantalising glimpses of what might have happened if Dean's vision had been supported by the kind of studio facilities and musicians that Jan had at his fingertips.
-
Rhino UK don't have the album on its website (not even as a forthcoming release.) I've emailed to ask if it will be released over here but no reply as yet.
-
My review of the new album has gone up on www.jananddean.moonfruit.com
:) Mark
-
I've only had a quick chance to skip through the preview copy I recieved off Rhino, I didn't listen closely enough and got my stereo mixes wrong, will all be sorted soon plus full photos of the booklet and artwork! Trying to get a few things on the site at the moment in my limited time, thank you for pointing out the errors Mark... I'll read through the 16-page book when I get a chance and update a few things.
:) Mark
PS. The review has been update, and will be updated againshortly with more info and photos.
-
Amazon UK are now advertising the album. No release date yet but you can sign up to be notified when it is available.
-
I see the site scooby has made and its a great site, anyone in my book who takes time to help spread the jan and dean name is doing a great job, that includes Mark moore, dani from www.surfinagain.com ,Lori from the surfun fanclub,as it takes time and a lot of energy to run a web site or a fan club,,and i m sure you all with me will agree with me,
Wouldn t it be boring if everyone thought the same, all of us on the forum are passionate fans of both jan and dean and at time we differ after all this forum is a place to debate your side of the jan and dean story and that what makes this forum great,
so lets grab our board and ride the wild surf on the carnival of sound forum,
-
Well, this is very exciting. I have had copies of these songs for years. Getting a clean copy is a dream come true, one that I never thought that I would see. I have been absent from here for a long time. Nice to be back among you all.
-
Some reference, for those who don't know . . . Carnival of Sound reflects what Jan Berry was up to in the studio while Brian Wilson was working on Smile/Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, and Friends with the Beach Boys.
-
Fantastic record package - Great artwork and even better mixes... and now I can hear the vocal tracks on Hawaii finally!! Is it possible for someone to upload the original lyrics? I want to read and sing these great songs - my miming abilities just don't cut it. Thanks!

Okay, some new threads are going up with the lyrics -- starting with "Hawaii."
-
The rest of the lyrics have been posted.

Here's a note that Jan & Dean aficionado Elliot Kendall put on a public yahoo board . . . so I thought I'd share it here. Fans may remember that Elliot wrote the liners for J&D's "Teen Suite 1958-1962" comp.
Just nabbed the finished TAMI DVD and Carnival Of Sound CD -- both are the coolest freaking Jan Dean masterpieces officially released in recent years -- gems on TAMI are commentary by Steve Binder, he gets WAY deep on why The Beach Boys were chopped out, how cool and underappreciated the dancers were/are, how all the artists that performed were mega-groovy and no egos and all appeared at the end to prove that they were ALL there at once --- and how J&D management was in the same building as he was, etc etc -- TAMI radio spots are also part of the bonus material (voiced by Wink Martindale? Someone probably knows or it might be in the booklet) -- Binder as many of you know is the same visionary who was behind Hullabaloo and Elvis '68 Comeback Special --- commentary is well worth the wait and super heavy ---
------ the Carnival I got was the CD version from an industry bro, but I plunked down on the credit card for TWO copies of the genius LP-sized $49.95 deluxe-o version, both versions are expected to go fast, haven't seen the deluxe yet but the CD sounds amazing, killer mastering --- "Louisiana Man" and all the freaky sitar by way of the surf is completely intact, crisp and clean -- Sandoval, Stanley, Hersch, Farber, Moore, Priore NAILED IT and the insanely great "rainy day vibe" artwork by Dean and overall packaging are pure clown prince trippy eye candy --- can't wait to dig into the notes @@@@@
-
Just got my copy in the mail and, man, it sounds really great. The stereo mixes are really well done, but the mono really tears it up. I've always been pretty ambivalent about this record except for Blowin My Mind, Fan Tan , and Hawaii, but I intend to give it a good listen and re-appraisal in the next few days. Good work all involved!
-
I keep seeing references to "1,500" copies of the LP+CD set. Where is that number officially documented? My set isn't numbered and I don't recall seeing 1,500 (or any number) on the Handmade site.
-
I ordered too
The "Carnival of Sound" LP looks great side by side with my original British CBS stereo vinyl copy of "Save for a rainy Day"

If I recall correctly, Sandoval has mentioned that number.

Double Whammy.
-
I'd love to see the cover. I'd love to have a copy too.
-
I might be wrong but were any UK pressings found with a cover? I seem to recall that a few LPs were found but no covers.
-
The British "Save for a rainy Day" albums have no cover
Only three copies are known to exist and they come in a plain white sleeve
Two copies have a promo stamp on the label - mine hasn't 8)
-
Got the CD-only package in the mail yesterday. Initial impression is that it sounds great. Detailed comments to follow...

If I recall correctly, Sandoval has mentioned that number.
The 1,500 number was also just repeated in a recent newsletter from Rhino Handmade.
But it refers to the Deluxe Edition (CD/LP). The CD Edition (29 tracks) will be around longer.

Can you share a scan of the British LP label? . . . Maybe add it to the photos section?
-
I uploaded it in the photo section, but quality is bad, so here's a better pic
(http://www.surfinagain.com/images/SFARD.jpg)
-
Very cool . . .
And in the Photos section, viewers can also get this larger version by clicking on the thumbnail image.
-
Extremely cool! Never seen a closeup of the UK label. I'll work on getting some things together concerning the Japan issue and posting under the "Save For..." Album topic.
-
That would be great. I'd like to have a Japanese issue too, with the cover and everything
The UK one only came in a "Promo" stamped white sleeve
-
I intend to buy CARNIVAL in the near future. It's fascinating - well interesting at least - that both Jan & Dean used the name for separate projects where the other had no involvement.
CARNIVAL OF SOUND and SAVE IT FOR A RAINY DAY: Two sides of the same coin?
