DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / rare Jan & dean on Amazon Mp3 only
« on: May 29, 2012, 08:35:54 PM »
Was wondering if anybody else purchased "The Barons aka(rare) Jan & Dean Vol. 1 & 2 off of amazon. not bad for 8.99 each. They seem like the oddities album and the legendary masked surfer albums from the late 70's and or 80's. I like it, any versions of this stuff is kinda cool just to have in mp3 format. They only messed up once and put "only a boy" on twice on the one instead of "blowin my mind" . Still different mixes to my ears and something to listen too on my kindle and laptop.

On monday's episode the guys were picking out in california. At around 29 minutes into the show they place a call to get proper prices for surfboards there about to buy from a collector. In the backgound on a shelf is a copy of Jan & Dean's SURF CITY and other swingin cities album. In my opinion, its the best show yet. Not because of the J&D album, just really interesting. Those guys have a really cool job :) Thought you guys and girls would like this tidbit. Have a good one. b

Hey ppl.

I was on youtube lastnight before work and searched Jan & Dean just to see what was available. Well i listened to "little old lady" several versions. One was the orginal album cut, then maybe the surf to drag remix, and last but not least the Deano remake from the 70's. The remake should come with a warning  'what you are about to hear is a bad remake". My opinion yes. Im not attacking dean, just his remake. Listen to the original, with the opening bar. It's pure genius. it can turn a frown upside down, it's special and powerful. I thought about it all night. Just wish the remake's never happened. If your wondering i had a good night at work too. Those damn remake's make me nauseous.  Just talkin out loud. What do you guys think?

hey jay1,

Why would i be scared of sinatra??? or any of us, relax buddy. They made a movie about it.
Perhaps frank sr. figured it all wouldve never happened had dean not lent the money to set up the kidnapping. Then dean acts like its kinda funny and never actually takes it seriously. Were talking about someone's family. We all know frank had connections on all sides political and underground. KEEP this in mind, "were just sayin" like talking out loud man. I dont think anyone has any secret tapes or anything like that. I've talked to some hardcore J&D fans over the years and this subject comes up now and again. Some people say our current president wasnt even born in the USA. Doesnt mean its false or true, but "sometimes you gotta wonder".  Good title for a song,  :)  burton

was the name of the movie called "Stealing Sinatra"?? I watched this movie a few years ago. It was ok, they had both Jan & Dean Portrayed in the movie. The actors were weak. But it did cover the whole angle of the kidnapping and how dean thought it was a big joke.
i heard several years ago about the sinatra revenge theory. I guess you can't doubt it. No wonder jan's dad couldnt stand Dean. I also heard that bigtime hollywood executive's would say "its a shame what happened to jan when it was meant for Dean". WOW good stuff Mark

I too have been listening to the COS in my car.
Can't agree with you more jdman. I've been blasting it too. Just a great track. you can hear the double drums so clear.WOW. I gotta say that i really like the stereo tracks the most. you can hear so much more of jan singing along. I must admit MARK track 16 is a great take of the song, But Jan tinkered too much with the overdubs in my opinion. Wish he finished the song before the accident. Imagine if things worked out between jan and dean and dean sung lead on "blowin my mind". HE too may have done well with it.
One other thing. Wish we could've had a track only of CARNIVAL of Sound Backing track. I rate that right up there with STACK O TRACKS "sloop John B" by brian wilson. Love that tune with or without the vocals. I now have a greater appreciation for " I know my mind" And "Laurel & Hardy". I hated those songs when i was a kid. my two cents. b

Hey Mark,

Nice job on the "Carnival of Sound" release. Everybody involved should be proud. I think the stereo versions show off the arrangements best. You can hear the "chingy" guitar's allover the place. The "Blowin my Mind" backing track sounds like it could've been a nice fit on the "Folk n Roll" album, had it been finished. Again kudo's to all involved and thanks. B

The "Carnival of Sound" saga actually starts in early 1966.

I'll go with " HAWAII". It's sounds so pre-accident.

No one probably cares but in anticipation of the arrival of COS. I've been listening to the INTL 1968 boot of COS. You know it's not that bad. I've heard the other(crap) boots. This wasn't a bad comp of the project, And yes mark i know the liner's are off. Atleast we had that for a few years to hold us over.

Hope i get my COS soon.  b

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: The 1977 Re-recordings.
« on: February 09, 2010, 02:01:22 AM »

I mean perhaps JAN needed the money to record more music or just needed it for whatever. I'm thinkin jan's thought's were not at that time thinking about his original productions being buried by these 77 recordings. Who would think back then that this would happen. Maybe Al Gore but that's it....

Somebody on Jan's end was asleep at the wheel big time to allow Dean's re-recordings to be issued under the name "Jan & Dean."

Hey Mark, Do you think it was just a case of take the money and run from jan's end. Perhaps he got money just for his name not really seeing the damage it could do in the future. I agree the re's are crap with a capital  "C". But also he may have not made nothing off of it either. Just wondering.....

I'm gonna go with "Tomorrow's Teardrops". I just like that song. I think Jan had a bit of an older tone and he was trying to sing too.

Does Dean have input on this project?
Like many fans I can't wait for this. I remember talking to other J&D fans about this like ten years ago. I heard like 5 or so years ago a label was looking at taking a shot at this project but it never happened. Right after the bootleg came out.
One more thing have you Mark heard the whole thing(CD & LP)?  My opinion " blowin my mind " could've and should've been a hit!! I'd like to hear from anyone(on the forum) about this.
