This is proving a one man post.

Cover of Surfer's Dream also.

Both tracks worth a listen.

PS hope someone replies.

Haven’t listened yet.

Just found this. He sings the vocal parts of a number of Jan and Dean songs. Looks as though he "heard" the music rather than reading from a score. Interesting to see the breakdown.

I don't know if Mark is able to comment on the accuracy etc.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Apple Music lossless
« on: April 06, 2023, 02:53:29 AM »
Given that compression issues have been a factor as Jan and Dean were moved from vinyl to cd it is interesting that Apple seem to be converting their albums to lossless. I haven’t listened to much as yet but seems to reinstate something of a richer sound.

Really good fun. Wouldn’t it be great if there was some studio cottage.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Mark’s certificate
« on: December 17, 2022, 08:13:07 AM »
Congratulations Mark on the recognition given to your biography of Jan
So well deserved. I’ve been an advocate for Jan from the late sixties when I first heard Jan and Dean on the radio. They were not played much in the uk and many of their albums weren’t released here. I had to import them myself. No internet / no Amazon then. I contributed a bit to Ripped Baggies although my name was always misspelled.
It took you though and your two brilliantly researched and written books to ensure Jan’s legacy.
Many, many thanks

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: Happy Christmas Everyone
« on: December 04, 2022, 08:06:43 AM »
Yes happy Christmas from the UK.

A great year. Mark has secured Jan's legacy.

We just need a Jan Berry anthology and the Jan and Dean box set we have all asked for.

That would make a great new year.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: DEan's latest compilation
« on: November 07, 2022, 12:43:19 PM »
Now available through Amazon though oddly if you enter Dean Torrence in the search box it doesn't come up. If however you enter 'the teammates twenty years of making music' it does!!!!

I have downloaded the album but am getting the CD version for the sleeve notes.

I repeat my pony above that we need a Jan Berry anthology. I do't know if there are ownership rights issues but a selection of Jan's best post accident cuts would be great. Alternate versions etc a real bonus.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / DEan's latest compilation
« on: October 16, 2022, 10:42:07 AM »
Thanks for the update. Tried the link to the CD version - not working (at least in the UK). (I want to add the CD to my collection as well as having a digital version.)
Good news (if you have Apple Music) - it is there and I've downloaded it. Not listened to all but some new stuff.

More evidence that we need a Jan Berry anthology / collection. Dean Has David Beard punting for him I would guess.

Not sure if there are contractual complications in collecting Jan's solo stuff but it would be a great collection.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: Jan Berry's Original Music Scores Published
« on: October 10, 2022, 08:01:28 AM »
The interview with Phil Miglioratti is fascinating. I have read both of Mark's books and this interview adds or at the very least underlines and confirms Jan's massive talents. Not satisfied as bass and lead singer, song writer and producer, Jan's arranging abilities surely exceed any contemporary rock singer / musician. I know of no other performer (in the usual meaning of that word) who was able to orchestrate such complex arrangements and for so many different instruments.
Jan did not have that "natural" genius of Brian Wilson but he was far more talented and by all accounts (not just Mark's) influenced Brian and others... in creating a studio based sound.
It is fascinating also to read about the separate arrangements for live shows.

I do wonder - in terms of Jan's legacy - why he so often chose to not focus on the four part harmonies on tv (other than cost) meaning that some of the live versions we have tend to expose Jan and Dean's vocals.

Thanks Mark again for your work.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Displaying Jan and Dean
« on: September 04, 2022, 12:08:01 PM »
Over the years my Jan and Dean collection has grown and I decided a while ago that some of  it deserved to be displayed - the 45 pic sleeves, some rarer album covers, the programme and some sheet music. Some I have in individual frames but the 45s eps, a few photos and autographs are in a big frame. They look great. I was hoping to post a photo but I cannot reduce the memory's size of the picture enough to upload it.

Anyway, I wondered if anyone else had any of their collection displayed - and if so - how?

Pride of place awaits a Jan and Dean boxset if it ever arrives!

Presumably the tapes exist.

This is all part of my content that we still need a Jan and Dean box set.
