Jan & Dean: Official Message Board for Jan Berry

I don't think just because some people didn't see Dean or he wasn't out as much as Jan, that that means he didn't care about the fans. I'm not an apologist for either of them, they both had huge egos (perhaps in different ways), but I think this is at least a mischaracterization. That's like saying Brian Wilson or Bruce Johnston don't care about fans because don't tend to care for meet and greets, though, Brian seems to hate them, while Bruce has extremely off days on occasion.

I've always had a fondness for this album.

To me, the rap sections add a lot of character and I welcome them with open arms.

I think most of the songs here are great, but "So Here I Go Again" is my absolute favorite. Jan just sounds absolutely amazing here.

As far as the remakes, I'm not a big fan of the idea in general. That was one of the initial drawbacks of Brian Wilson's Imagination, but I ended up liking "Keep An Eye On Summer" and, even more, "Somewhere Quiet" from No Pier Pressure  But, I like the additions that Jan added to the four here. The one drawback are those extremely harsh synths at the beginning of "Dead Man's Curve." I don't find the remakes essential, but certainly enjoyable.

Can someone tell me if the mono and stereo album mixes were done separately? I was curious as to whether the mono are just fold downs. Specifically, albums like Folk'n'Roll are hard to listen to through headphones and so, I was going to use editing software to fold them down. But only if these would be a somewhat accurate representation of the original mono album mixes.

Brian Wilson also used a fragment of "Gee" in SMILE . . . an old R&B classic that Jan & Dean had covered in 1960.

I had forgot about that being on the Jan & Dean album!

Interesting that "Gee" would be of interest to both of these geniuses.

I was over on the Smiley Smile board today and came across a post that stated that Dean was involved in ending Landy's reign over Brian Wilson and was curious how and how much he was involved. I've never heard this before, but I do recall some type of interview with Dean talking about how difficult it was to contact Brian.

Any information would be much appreciated!

That's the sad part about this ridiculous feud that goes on, mostly from The Beach Boys' side. There was never any bad blood between The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean. Brian and Jan were a dynamic, effective creative force and people should just leave it at that. They both learned tremendously from each other.
A lot of Jan's chart successes had Brian's name attatched in some way, but just because Jan's name wasn't on any Beach Boys' releases doesn't mean his imprint wasn't there through what he taught Brian. And, though, single-wise Brian was often a co-writer, a lot of (what I consider to be) Jan's best work was done completely devoid of Brian Wilson, such as Folk 'n' Roll, "You Really Know How To Hurt A Guy", and Carnival of Sound.
So, just to make the point from what, even I would consider, a Brian Wilson devotee, Jan Berry was no slouch. And he certainly didn't need people to prop him up whatsoever. I love Jan Berry's music just about as much as I do Brian's. And wish people would recognize their musical accomplishments for what they are: their own.
