DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: Surf City collaboration
« on: July 31, 2019, 03:46:45 AM »
I remember when Michael “Doc Rock” Kelly interviewed Dean years ago in his Sunshine Music fanzine. Just as he mentioned in his latest book, Dean corrected a lot of the words to make more sense with the surfing lingo he was familiar with. According to him, collaborating and changing a few words in a novel like War and Peace is very insignificant, but not in a 2 minute and 24 second song with just a few lines in it. He should have received writers credit along with Berry and Wilson. I’m surprised that Jan wasn’t that generous towards Dean. As for Brian, it’s well known he omitted Mike Love’s name from many songs. Unfortunately, I guess we’ll never know how much Jan or Brian wrote lyrically or musically. Thankfully, Dean knew to put in the proper surfing terms of that era.

Just want to throw out there that it actually wasn't Brian that kept Mike's name off of some of their best known, early songs. That was done at the hands of Murry Wilson, his father.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: Jan's love of his fans
« on: June 25, 2018, 07:41:56 PM »
I don't think just because some people didn't see Dean or he wasn't out as much as Jan, that that means he didn't care about the fans. I'm not an apologist for either of them, they both had huge egos (perhaps in different ways), but I think this is at least a mischaracterization. That's like saying Brian Wilson or Bruce Johnston don't care about fans because don't tend to care for meet and greets, though, Brian seems to hate them, while Bruce has extremely off days on occasion.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / (Bop Bop) On The Beach

Does anyone know the genesis behind this song? Does it even feature Jan at all?

I've always had a fondness for this album.

To me, the rap sections add a lot of character and I welcome them with open arms.

I think most of the songs here are great, but "So Here I Go Again" is my absolute favorite. Jan just sounds absolutely amazing here.

As far as the remakes, I'm not a big fan of the idea in general. That was one of the initial drawbacks of Brian Wilson's Imagination, but I ended up liking "Keep An Eye On Summer" and, even more, "Somewhere Quiet" from No Pier Pressure  But, I like the additions that Jan added to the four here. The one drawback are those extremely harsh synths at the beginning of "Dead Man's Curve." I don't find the remakes essential, but certainly enjoyable.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Jan and Dean punk music quote by Dave Marsh
« on: December 08, 2016, 12:31:20 PM »
I am looking for information for an assignment I'm doing on punk rock. In Jan and Dean's Wikipedia page it states "according to rock critic Dave Marsh, the attitude and public persona of punk rock can be traced to Jan and Dean.[58] Certainly their early hits, recorded with myriad overdubs in a garage, and their casual and goofy stage antics were consistent with some of punk rock's ethos. and gives: "An Analytical Study", in the liners for Jan and Dean's Anthology" as the source. I don't have the Anthology album. If anyone can point me to where I can see the entry or can post it or pm it, that it would be very helpful!!

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: Mono and Stereo
« on: October 06, 2012, 05:43:52 AM »

Test your theory . . . Fold them down, and then compare the results with the original mono versions.

I don't have the original mono to compare it to. If I had those, I wouldn't need to fold down the stereo recordings because I'd already have them in mono.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Mono and Stereo
« on: October 05, 2012, 05:46:09 PM »
Can someone tell me if the mono and stereo album mixes were done separately? I was curious as to whether the mono are just fold downs. Specifically, albums like Folk'n'Roll are hard to listen to through headphones and so, I was going to use editing software to fold them down. But only if these would be a somewhat accurate representation of the original mono album mixes.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Normally, I feel Dean gets a bum rap, but he seems somewhat revisionist here in regards to Carnival Of Sound. He says he wasn't really into the psychedelic scene, but wasn't he pretty involved with Brian Wilson during the Smile era?

Brian Wilson also used a fragment of "Gee" in SMILE . . . an old R&B classic that Jan & Dean had covered in 1960.

I had forgot about that being on the Jan & Dean album!

Interesting that "Gee" would be of interest to both of these geniuses.

What are everyone's thoughts on The Beach Boys' Smile Sessions?

Although a lot of comparisons between Carnival Of Sound and Smile have already been made, I, personally find it interesting that both Jan and Brian chose to work in songs of the past, ie "Louisiana Man," "Old Master Painter," etc. into their respective takes on psychedelic/progressive music.

Its truly a gift that we now have a representation of both these albums officially released!

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Dean's help to free Brian
« on: July 27, 2011, 10:35:15 AM »
I was over on the Smiley Smile board today and came across a post that stated that Dean was involved in ending Landy's reign over Brian Wilson and was curious how and how much he was involved. I've never heard this before, but I do recall some type of interview with Dean talking about how difficult it was to contact Brian.

Any information would be much appreciated!

That's the sad part about this ridiculous feud that goes on, mostly from The Beach Boys' side. There was never any bad blood between The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean. Brian and Jan were a dynamic, effective creative force and people should just leave it at that. They both learned tremendously from each other.
A lot of Jan's chart successes had Brian's name attatched in some way, but just because Jan's name wasn't on any Beach Boys' releases doesn't mean his imprint wasn't there through what he taught Brian. And, though, single-wise Brian was often a co-writer, a lot of (what I consider to be) Jan's best work was done completely devoid of Brian Wilson, such as Folk 'n' Roll, "You Really Know How To Hurt A Guy", and Carnival of Sound.
So, just to make the point from what, even I would consider, a Brian Wilson devotee, Jan Berry was no slouch. And he certainly didn't need people to prop him up whatsoever. I love Jan Berry's music just about as much as I do Brian's. And wish people would recognize their musical accomplishments for what they are: their own.

Has anyone ever heard what Brian Wilson thought about Jan's later 60's work such as Folk n Roll, "Norwegian Wood", and such? And any idea that Jan thought about Pet Sounds?

I'm also curious as to whether Brian was involved with Jan immediately after his accident. For instance did he visit Jan or stop into the studio at all while Jan was working on Carnival of Sound?

It would've been an amazing time if both Smile and Carnival of Sound had come out when they originally should have!
