Title: Noticed another interview with Dean .... or two

Here’s part of what Dean had to say…

“I started missing Jan when he had his accident. He was never quite the same after that. After the accident he was almost a totally different person. The new guy I cared for, but we didn’t have anything particularly in common. It was fun to give him a vehicle to get out and perform live because he really loved it.”

The article has neat things in it that he describes about their funny ways before the accident…a few I’d never heard…like what they would wear (not exactly what the big wigs expected of them) and how they took surf boards with them to New York to do a Dick Clark show…putting them in a taxi and on the subway…so it is all worth reading.

And from another recent interview, Dean said,
“He was frustrated most of the time, and every day was a labor to him.  Hopefully, he’s in a better place.  His best times were on the stage.  If I could have kept him on stage 300 days a year, he probably would have been much happier.”

This is also from the interview:

"As far as being a part of the team he wasn’t because he didn’t really understand anything that we were doing or why we did it. He was kind of along for the ride. But still it was a good ride and he enjoyed it, but being a part of the camaraderie, he had nothing to do with that, which was a shame, but it was what it was. “He went from having an IQ of about 175 to 68. It was very limited the kinds of things he enjoyed."

I'm sorry, but Dean is just an asshole. An IQ of "68" actually indicates mental retardation. So, Dean is saying that Jan was a retard after the accident. It's amazing how a retard was able to produce Carnival of Sound, Second Wave, Port to Paradise, all those 1970s era singles, plus write all those songs after the accident.

Someone should tell Dean to shut the hell up. I mean, I am sure he knows, as we all do, that without Jan he would have become NOTHING, certainly not a famous, wealthy rock star (who continues to live off of Jan's legacy). From reading interviews with him over the years, Dean sounds like a non-reflective, closed in person who has major problems handling any kind of emotional intimacy. He lies about the past, and twists things to his advantage. And its become worse and worse over the past 10, 15 years. I think he just resents the fact that Jan, his meal ticket, got into the accident, essentially ending the creative part of their career. And once Jan became brain damaged, emotionally damaged Dean had no idea how to deal with him, so Jan became a "retard" to him.

I guess I have the right (responsibility even),  to change my post...and if the other person wishes to do so...I know they can too.

It just annoyed me too much ...even what I said in responding against the other posting person's remarks.

....sorry for siting the article here...  I like it

The results from the test are then used to classify people into various intelligence categories. The system used for such classification is commonly known as the Stanford-Binet system.

The following result below of IQ scores indicates the different intelligence categories:

Under 70: Very mentally retarded

71-80: Mentally retarded

81-90: Slightly slow to grasp change

91-110: Normal level of intellect

111-120: High Intelligence

121 - 150: Very high intelligence

150++: Exceptional intelligence

170++: Genius

I'm sorry, but Dean's comments indicate that he really didn't know or understand the post-accident Jan if he is saying that his post-accident IQ was 68, which does indicate mental retardation. It wasn't like Jan was some kind of idiot savant after the accident, who could do music and nothing else. And, Dean doesn't even talk about the post-accident musical abilities of Jan in the interview. If I was just a casual fan, I would think that Jan was a barely functioning person after the accident, and would know nothing about the musical side. Likely, that is because Dean know little--or was little interested--in the musical side of Jan, post-accident.  As far as the 1980 interview is concerned, that was 30 years ago, and it seems obvious that Jan and Dean's relationship deteriorated in the 1980s and 1990s. It's clear if you read Bob Greene's book--and btw, whatever the faults of that book, Bob certainly does not portray Jan as being of limited intelligence.

PS

I know nothing of Jan’s IQ…

I do know he is interesting, fun, kind, thoughtful, considerate….clever, witty, hard working, showed a caring memory…directive… careful, particular, forgiving.

Shall I go on?

I think Dean is those things too.

(will I ever stop?)  (I hope so)   :-[
(maybe this will do it)
Let's put it this way:

Jan's IQ was obviously higher than mine.
He would not have spent this amount of time (or any) on this
and would have advised me not to
He would have told me to "be cool"

On the IQ 3 issue. i think most people know very little about IQ #'s . They just pick a # that sounds low or high. Having no idea where the boundries lie. I'm sure this was the case for Dean.

All of this illustrates an inherent flaw with the Stanford-Binet system in getting a true picture of one's intellect. If you've ever seen or taken the test, you realize how difficult it would be for someone like Jan with his impaired language and memory function to get a high score; not because of a lack of intelligence, but because of the roadblocks presented by his disabilities-- to understand what is being asked and getting the answer onto paper.

Dean once mentioned what a great blackjack player Jan was--after the accident.  From what I understand, Jan was also still good with numbers.  He obviously still possessed the problem-solving and computing ability he had before, but his means to express it on the test was greatly reduced.

In short, all standardized tests have their limitations.

I d say jans IQ was a lot higher maybe straight after the crash it may have been lower, but how can a guy produce an album (second wave),do all the scores, all the arranging, producing the album, sorting out musicians,

Also whats the deal with dean being an asshole, you can disagree with a persons view,

As Lou adler said in the biography "dean was a good friend to jan"

dean could have walked away and said i dont want no more jan and dean stuff,he d made a lot of money, but he gave his signiture to the carnival of sound,so jan could get the album released, also toured with him until march 2004,

We love you dean

Through out the years Its been said that Jan's intel didnt suffer . It was that his cumunication ability had been cut both coming and going. Kinda like an engine that still puts out 430 HP but has a trans that 's acting up and only once in a while will work at 50-75%. I also understand musical is different and Jan still had that ability . Only now it took him too long to tell the players what was wrong , changes etc.. that he used to do in the studio.
