I have interviewed and continue to interview David Loe. David was band leader and lead guitarist with Jan Berry in the 1980's and has some great information to share with Jan & Dean fans.

Please visit http://www.jananddean.moonfruit.com/#/david-loe/4563744518 for a great exclusive interview, some exclusive photos and an up-coming "memoirs" section in which David tells us about his life on the road with Jan and much more.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Schlock Rod Pt1 & Pt2
« on: February 18, 2010, 12:50:49 PM »
Am I the only one who really loves this song? Part 1 I find is more commercial, but I find when it's combined with Part 2 it makes a great, funny, and somewhat original idea for a song even more compelling.

Think about it, of all the songs in all the world, how many songs sound like Schlock Rod? How many make you laugh time and time again? There are none, it's unique, in a way that only Jan & Dean could make a record.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / The 1977 Re-recordings.
« on: February 02, 2010, 08:03:04 AM »
What do you fans think of Dean's 1977 recordings of 6 of Jan & Dean's hits, plus 4 Beach Boys songs (recorded I presume because Jan & Dean sang these songs in live performances?) - ok, "Little Deuce Coupe" is also a Jan & Dean track, but you get what I mean.

The thing is, if you think about it, most casual music buyers only ever hear these versions. During the 80's and 90's these were nearly the only versions available to casual fans, and were repackaged endlessley. Even today the number of compilations with these mixes is mind-blowing!

Taking that into concideration, are you happy that to a heck of a lot of people, these songs ARE Jan & Dean? I've been flicking through a few mates record collections, and talking to a few people again, and the nearly all only have these versions (I know, because they always mention "Fun Fun Fun", "I Get Around"or  "Help Me Rhonda" when I ask about what songs are on them).

Personally, I quite like a few of the tracks. "I Get Around" I think is well recorded, as is "LIttle Old Lady" and "Dead Man's Curve", but I do think that these tracks may have harmed Jan & Dean's presence as too many people only know these recordings.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Why do you enjoy Jan & Dean?
« on: January 28, 2010, 06:31:45 AM »
This is a straight forward question. Why exactly do you enjoy listening to Jan & Dean?

The reason I ask, is for the last 30 years I have been trying to get friends, other music fans, work colleagues, and my partner to listen and enjoy Jan & Dean's music. The sad thing is, they all come up with the same reasons on why they don't enjoy the music. Jan & Dean just sound like a cheap Beach Boys imitation/tribute band, Jan & Dean sing out of tune, Jan & Dean who??? These are just some examples I have heard endless times. I just can't get people to see what I see!

I enjoy, no make that LOVE Jan & Dean for the music, the attitude, the comedy, the seriousness, the productions and for the Jan & Dean story... A story of what might have been had Jan not had his accident.  And I think it's the whole Jan & Dean story above all else why I have been such a loyal fan and friend to their legend for all these years

Ok, whats your favourite Jan & Dean collection, be it greatest hits or just a collection of their songs?

I think for me it now has to be the "Complete Liberty Singles Collection" in glorious mono. Everything you could ever want from the Liberty era.

THE TAMI SHOW / Jan's comments at TAMI concert.

JAN BERRY: "Ok, lets hear it for the one and only, the five and only, the real surfers... The Beach Boys"

That always struck me as a weird one. Why did Jan say "the real surfers"? Was it because The Beach Boys were so much bigger musically than Jan & Dean at the time? After all, both Jan AND Dean were surfers, and only Dennis in The Beach Boys was the real surfer there.
