Yeah, Only A Boy is an incredible song. I love the two part harmonies on the chorus a lot. The arrangement is genius.

Yeah, Deadman's Curve is incredible. I love how dissonant the main guitar/horn melody is with the melody in the key of F# minor against the F# major chord. Very fitting.

And Artie was one of the writers. I believe the song was mostly written by Brian Wilson and Artie Kornfield, but I don't remember where I read that. It is without a doubt, a Jan Berry production though.

Great song, Mark. I didn't think of that one. There is so much going on in that track, yet it's not cluttered. Great production and arranging.

If you had to pick one song to prove Jan Berry's production genius to someone what would it be?

Mine would be Ride The Wild Surf. The harmonies, dynamics, tempo, strings, guitar, everything is just genius. It totally rocks, but it's also beautiful. A close second of mine would be When It's Over because of the unique percussion, and I think an English Horn that plays that very somber melody.

Thanks for the answers! I have one more question. I'm still in school and I'm trying to pursue music, as a producer/songwriter. Any advice?

Hey Rob! What is your favorite track off the album? And what did you, as a producer, learn from Jan?

So it sounds like we've got Jan on prominent lead vocals, with Brian doubling his voice. Jan, Brian and Matadors possibly with Dean on backing vocals too, and Tony on the signature falsetto maybe with additions Brian here and there

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re-Recordings of Classics
« on: May 04, 2017, 05:39:08 AM »
What are your opinions on Jan & Dean's re-recordings?

I really enjoy some of the ones recorded in 1974, the Legendary Masked Surfers stuff. "Gonna Hustle You", "Drag City", and "Sidewalk Surfin" sound really great. With that being said, the rest of those recordings are just okay. There's definitely a lot of energy there but they don't compare to the originals. Dean's re recording of "Summertime" from this era is great too.

The 80's ones with Papa Doo Ron Ron I can't stand, with one exception- "Surf City". I think that version of Surf City has a ton of energy and ballsiness. But the others just sound lazy and uninspired... Although in the 80's, Dean did a re-recording of "Like A Summer Rain" which, in my opinion, is better than the original.

The re-recordings on Second Wave make me a bit sad. While, Jan sounds good, considering the circumstances, to hear an auto-tuned, highly edited, version of Jan's post-accident vocals, just makes me remember how incredible he used to sound.... With that being said, I like the guitar solo on "Deadman's Curve".

How do you feel about the various re-recordings throughout the years?

The only songs I can clearly hear Jan on are
1) Mulholland, with the spoken word outro. This is especially obvious in the stereo version.
2) "Silently" in Love & Hate
3) Tijuana--- (Jan, Dean & Fantastic Baggys on original Backing Vox, which sound audible)

I think that's about it. There's a common misconception over on the J&D Facebook fan page that Jan sang lead on Blowin My Mind, but that's Glen Campbell.
