CARNIVAL OF SOUND / Second Wave 2018
« on: January 12, 2018, 05:54:14 AM »
Any updates about the re-release of Second Wave? Will it be remastered? I hope it will be- the CD I have is very trebely, almost to the point where it hurts my ears, which is a shame because it covers up the great production by Jan and Rob. Also, can we expect any other J&D releases in the near future? Or did we just get lucky with FOS coming out 2017?

Getting Filet of Soul this past September was a real treat, but can we expect any releases in the future?

The Beatles and The Beach Boys have both had the releases of major box sets including remixes and unreleased content.

It's really got me thinking that Jan and Dean need a 2017 box set! In my fantasy it would be all of their 50s-60s material in both original mono mixes and modern stereo remixes. Also all of the post accident stuff too. Unreleased content. That would be so great.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / JB's Production Standout
« on: May 16, 2017, 07:25:06 AM »
If you had to pick one song to prove Jan Berry's production genius to someone what would it be?

Mine would be Ride The Wild Surf. The harmonies, dynamics, tempo, strings, guitar, everything is just genius. It totally rocks, but it's also beautiful. A close second of mine would be When It's Over because of the unique percussion, and I think an English Horn that plays that very somber melody.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re-Recordings of Classics
« on: May 04, 2017, 05:39:08 AM »
What are your opinions on Jan & Dean's re-recordings?

I really enjoy some of the ones recorded in 1974, the Legendary Masked Surfers stuff. "Gonna Hustle You", "Drag City", and "Sidewalk Surfin" sound really great. With that being said, the rest of those recordings are just okay. There's definitely a lot of energy there but they don't compare to the originals. Dean's re recording of "Summertime" from this era is great too.

The 80's ones with Papa Doo Ron Ron I can't stand, with one exception- "Surf City". I think that version of Surf City has a ton of energy and ballsiness. But the others just sound lazy and uninspired... Although in the 80's, Dean did a re-recording of "Like A Summer Rain" which, in my opinion, is better than the original.

The re-recordings on Second Wave make me a bit sad. While, Jan sounds good, considering the circumstances, to hear an auto-tuned, highly edited, version of Jan's post-accident vocals, just makes me remember how incredible he used to sound.... With that being said, I like the guitar solo on "Deadman's Curve".

How do you feel about the various re-recordings throughout the years?

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Save For A Rainy Day - Acid Pop
« on: April 19, 2017, 01:02:26 PM »
The Save For A Rainy Day album is often referred to as Acid Pop or Psychedelic Pop which I definitely agree with. There are some very trippy moments on this record. Was Dean going for a (then current) Psychedelic sound? Or maybe experimenting with the drugs that led his contemporaries (Brian Wilson & The Beatles for example) to move into Psychedelic music?

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / J&D Michelle
« on: April 18, 2017, 07:10:11 AM »
When was Jan & Dean's version of Michelle recorded? And I can't tell who's singing lead vocals. It doesn't sound like Jan to me. Is it Dean? Or someone else?

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / J&D Chords
« on: February 15, 2017, 06:54:14 AM »
I've been searching the internet for J&D chords, but I haven't had too much luck. A lot of the hits are on Ultimate Guitar, but I've been noticing a lot of errors. Are there any good sites, books, or even people to learn the J&D chords from? Even some of the lesser known cuts?

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Dean as solo star?
« on: January 03, 2017, 08:48:32 AM »
So we all know that J&D were super stars in their day.

We also know that it was Jan who got into singing, and to return from the military, to pursue music.

But do you all think it would have been possible for Dean to somehow end up as a music star had it not been for Jan? (Probably not, in my opinion, but food for thought...)
