What are your opinions on Jan & Dean's re-recordings?
I really enjoy some of the ones recorded in 1974, the Legendary Masked Surfers stuff. "Gonna Hustle You", "Drag City", and "Sidewalk Surfin" sound really great. With that being said, the rest of those recordings are just okay. There's definitely a lot of energy there but they don't compare to the originals. Dean's re recording of "Summertime" from this era is great too.
The 80's ones with Papa Doo Ron Ron I can't stand, with one exception- "Surf City". I think that version of Surf City has a ton of energy and ballsiness. But the others just sound lazy and uninspired... Although in the 80's, Dean did a re-recording of "Like A Summer Rain" which, in my opinion, is better than the original.
The re-recordings on Second Wave make me a bit sad. While, Jan sounds good, considering the circumstances, to hear an auto-tuned, highly edited, version of Jan's post-accident vocals, just makes me remember how incredible he used to sound.... With that being said, I like the guitar solo on "Deadman's Curve".
How do you feel about the various re-recordings throughout the years?
