DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Happy Christmas
« on: December 24, 2021, 08:17:57 AM »
Happy Christmas to all Jan and Dean fans across the world and a big thanks to Mark for his two great books.

Happy new year everyone.

Etsy are selling at ridiculous cost Jan and Dean 12 inch versions of Such a good night for dreaming - Palisades park, featuring vintage pin ups. They look terrible and a strange choice of songs. Does anyone know who is doing them and why?

Google took me to a link but the station is not available in the UK.

Brilliant news and thanks

Hi All
Writing from the UK.
I see that the new book is now listed on the publisher's website but Amazon are still saying unavailable (both US and UK sites). I have had my copy on order since February and wondered what the issues was. I bought Mark's other book (brilliant!) through Amazon UK.

My concern with Dean's rerecordings is that those of us advocating for Jan and Dean do so on the basis of Jan's arrangements and productions - the original multi-layered versions. Our case is diluted at best with the inferior remakes that are all over the place. The casual listener is too easily taken to these. I came to Jan and Dean initially through the singles and was blown away when I discovered the richness of the albums.I can't imagine taking the time to do that based on Dean's reworking.
I strongly contend that Jan's expertise in the studio and his use of the Wrecking Crew was a huge influence on Brian Wilson. Impossible to prove this via the remakes.
I know Dean wasn't alone in this but the versions he gave us are so inferior to the originals. I think Jan's voice - multi-tracked - is often overlooked. His phrasing and the 'punch' of his voice gives further depth to the songs.

PS Can't wait for the new book.

Jill certainly has a story and a really intriguing one. I guess she is directing her creativity into her art. She is immensely talented.

From the choice of cover art!!!!!!! To the odd selection of tracks, this was a very odd album. I'm from the UK and the album wasn't released over here. I found it in a vinyl record store in London. I had to do a double take as I thought I had picked up a kid's sing along album!

Given Popsicle had made the charts as a single, it seems a real throw away!

Was originally B side to From All Over the World. I can't quite place the song in the order of things. But one of my favourites.

Yes a great track. The background arrangements are classic. Can't believe it was just a B side.

Just came across this 1964 French band Les Kelton's recording of The New Girl in School.

Misses Jan's production but shows the basic quality of the song.

I can find little about the group (seems to have been short lived) or chart success in France.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Lossless audio
« on: June 15, 2021, 08:20:38 AM »
One of the minor themes in this message board over the years has been the way Jan and Dean's music has lost out as a result of compression issues on CDs and streaming. I had and still have almost all the vinyl albums and singles but inevitably I moved to CD and now most often listen when driving around using Apple music. (I have uploaded all my collection including the Collectors series that obviously did not have a commercial release.

The distinction between the rich and deep vinyl versions and the CDs etc is stark. Apple now have 'lossless' audio and I listened today to the Dead Man's Curve album using this. I wondered if anyone else had tried it?

It still doesn't match vinyl but I would say it improved the sound quality. Maybe it was wishful thinking - I hope not.

We were hoping for a digital version of Second Wave without the compression loss. Dare we hope that this will happen and that better still all Jan's productions will have a decent rerelease. Maybe a digital box set?

Any news on an iTunes release?

It looks as though the book launch has been delayed. Amazon UK were saying end of March - now July.

My copy ordered. Can't wait.
