JAN BERRY: "Ok, lets hear it for the one and only, the five and only, the real surfers... The Beach Boys"

That always struck me as a weird one. Why did Jan say "the real surfers"? Was it because The Beach Boys were so much bigger musically than Jan & Dean at the time? After all, both Jan AND Dean were surfers, and only Dennis in The Beach Boys was the real surfer there.

I think Jan was referring to the fact that Jan & Dean were enjoying the wave. Jan didn't care what subject they sang about. Surfing music was in at the time, so that's what Jan & Dean did. The Beach Boys, on the other hand, were the ones that started singing about surfing. So it was more a part of their identity.

Yes, I had always assumed that it was somewhere between mild sarcasm and an in-joke.

I thought it was jan paying respect to them,he saw how much talent they had,and were friends,so why not,its not a bad thing to be 2nd to the beachboys

Keep in mind most of the introductions were scripted with very little improvisation. Example: When Jan & Dean introduce James Brown & His Flames Dean's dressed up as a fireman and proceeds to discharge a fire extinguisher on Jan from head to toe. Great humor, very funny, and clearly scripted.

The comment by Jan that is truly eerie in the TAMI show is the joke about how Dean isn't a very good driver and barely makes it into his driveway.  Somewhat ironic given what happened shortly thereafter.

Yes, that comment was on the Command Performance album. it is a little eerie.
