DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: J&D Michelle
« on: April 28, 2017, 05:40:41 AM »
I know "Hide Your Love Away" is live because of the screaming, but I thought "Michelle" was a studio recording because of the lack of screaming, and high  production quality. I guess Jan was just that good!

Michelle was recorded live at a nightclub?

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Save For A Rainy Day - Acid Pop
« on: April 19, 2017, 01:02:26 PM »
The Save For A Rainy Day album is often referred to as Acid Pop or Psychedelic Pop which I definitely agree with. There are some very trippy moments on this record. Was Dean going for a (then current) Psychedelic sound? Or maybe experimenting with the drugs that led his contemporaries (Brian Wilson & The Beatles for example) to move into Psychedelic music?

When was Jan & Dean's version of Michelle recorded? And I can't tell who's singing lead vocals. It doesn't sound like Jan to me. Is it Dean? Or someone else?

This is probably one of the greatest surf records ever made. "Ride The Wild Surf" might be the greatest surf song ever made. "The Restless Surfer" is an incredible production. The string arrangement is really great. "Down At Malibu Beach" is a bluesy rock tune, that is also a lot of fun. I'd say there isn't a bad tune on this album, except for Skateboarding, Pt. 1.

This is probably one of my favorite Jan & Dean records. "When It's Over" is my all time favorite Jan & Dean song. It has a marvelous arrangement and heartfelt vocals. The title track is also a brilliant pop song, with crazy lyrics. "Anaheim" is one of Jan's most ambitious songs, and it really blew my mind when I heard it. The verse reminds me a little bit of "I Get Around". "Summer Means Fun" is great too. I love "Girls are two to one" part. "Move Out Little Mustang" is bizarre because it is quintessential Jan Berry/Brian Wilson, but it's sung by The Fantastic Baggies. For some reason I also love "Old Ladies Seldom Power Shift"! I guess I'm a sucker for the surf guitar  8)

Dean's lyrics are different than The Beach Boys' version of Little Deuce Coupe--- Did he just screw up and they kept it, or did they deliberately change the words?

I have all of my music digitally, although I have Second Wave and Golden Summer Nights on CD. I also have Brian Wilson's autograph!

There's some really great stuff!  ...And some not so great stuff...  But a good ending note for Jan.

I ordered a CD, and it came today. Cost $50 but there's some good stuff on here, so I'm happy. I also ordered the Golden Summer Days CD which has some great re-recordings. Dean's voice really shines on a lot of them.

Is it possible to get Second Wave digitally? I would get it on CD, but the CD's are so damn expensive!

Did he play upright bass or electric bass for Jan Berry? I know he usually played upright for Brian Wilson.

As far as I know, Jan had no involvement whatsoever.

Norman was put on BBs records because Murry Wilson made them put that, as he was anti-semetic and thought "Norberg" sounded "too Jewish" .  :(
