DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: Dean Torrence page

 :)  This is soooooo exciting!!

The song 'Taste of Rain' was written by Dean Torrence, but he used his mother's name on the label.  I am just curious why didn't he used his own name

Why not ask him on the page, Sunny?  He seems to be responding often.  :)

Forgive me for stretching this out.

Even though the Barons thing may not be an important issue ... there are other parts of the story that are to some degree.  And i feel when gathering the facts to be written, the point Wally made is valid.  Because not everything is documented or included in documentation ...which leaves pieces to issues OUT ... therefore, the documentation would seem to present something in a certain way, but it is NOT correct.

JDman and BlackSea... what you say, i also agree with.

It is important to have both recordings readily available.

And reaching back to past comments on these recent threads ... there's little way the recordings Dean did can be viewed as hurting them.  The point that people may have heard them only to think that that's the real Jan & Dean ... though that may sometimes have happened or happens still, but the benefit they gave, in my opinion, FAR outweighs that.

To what BlackSea said ...
Wally unfortunately if a comprehensive biography is to be written about Jan and Dean  both parties are going to cop negatives and positives. If  that doesnt happen the final product would be a watered down account and in turn lack  integrity.
If accuracy is what we are after then negatives are bound to surface for both Jan and Dean and the involved people around them.
In terms of fans undermining Dean I do agree with you. I think this may have been the reason Dean shut down the discussion board on his site. I read that bogus comment, "it could have been Jan and anyone" on several posts. Yep like you said it got boring.
As for the Kjan sessions, Yeah Deans on it but I think all the Dj work alternates between Jan and Don Altfeld. I dont think I hear Arnie although he is mentioned by Don.
In the end whatever craps put on Dean hes always gonna come out on top because hes always going to be one half of Jan and Dean.
Until next time,

...the part about integrity ... i think it's important to hear what Wally said before:

When people who attended the high school state that Dean was a member of The Barons including Dean there is no other option but to take the information as accurate and correct. The first person and documentary evidence suggests Dean was a member of the Barons. This whole saga was started by Don Altfeld who was always envious of Dean and his partnership with Jan.
I rest my case.

When looking solely at documentation and SOME interviews...EVEN THEN, what i quote Wally as having pointed out, THOSE things are quite! evidence and HEAVY evidence at that!! when placing history's realities down.  At least i certainly believe so.

...  Dean hes always gonna come out on top because hes always going to be one half of Jan and Dean
So very true

And without him, an act like Jan & Dean would not have happened, e.g. "Jan & Phil" (Sloan) wouldn't have worked because, apart from the great production work done by Jan, it was Dean who brought the other element on all those albums - the humour, and that's what made Jan & Dean different. Stuff like "Schlock Rod", "Submarine Races" or even their version of "Hang on Sloopy" are unique and priceless and made the difference to all the other artists. Brian did great songs too, but their albums were missing the punch and kick that Jan & Dean had

And that's ALL soooo  true and well stated!

Also, isn't it true that Dean's singing is just as wonderful as Jan's and they go together EXCELLENTLY as one can tell so crystal clearly starting with those ballads ... HOW did they do that harmonizing soooo pleasingly when they were just young men with NO training that i know of?!!  After i saw that movie and dug for their recordings, I was thrilled to hear what the real Jan & Dean had layed down ...THRILLED

Now, Surfin Again ... I will forever thank you and be thanking you for getting that precious memorial book for Jan a going in 2004 and for all the bittersweet gift of words people wrote and the opportunity to meet those people through gave some healing from the whole experience...the healing needed for what Jan went through, and for us losing Jan

... undermining of Deans role is ridiculous and it hurts Jan and Deans legacy alot more than a Ktel album.  ...

And then, of course, "Anthology" has it's biography ... and that says:

" ... wasn't long before a bunch of us on the team discovered that the sound in the shower room was the best echo around.

The football season ended which meant that the showers were now being used by the baseball team.  So the group, now called the Barons, had to start practicing in the boys' restrooms during lunch, but the teachers began to complain.   ...  "

The Rollingstone article does say:

" ....

At University High in West Los Angeles, Jan and Dean were members of the Barons, a club consisting of the school's big kids, the football players and leaders.  The singing began when the Barons got together in the shower after grid practice.

Well, I don't know 2dean2 about a Barons Club plate ... i don't see that in the Rollingstone article ... but checking others out, i see Dean O has written this in the lines of his biography section on his sweet site:

" ....

One day we heard about a school talent show to be held in our high school auditorium.  Jan thought it was now time to take this whole singing group thing a lot more seriously.  He suggested that we call ourselves The Baron singing group since most of us were in a high school YMCA/Car Club together called The Barons.  We started meeting at Jan’s parent’s Bel Air home after school.  They had converted a garage (a four car garage) into a music room complete with a piano and two Ampex reel to reel home tape recorders.  Jan had found a way to create a delay echo effect by using the two tape recorders at the same time.  We worked on three songs, “Get a Job”, “Rock and Roll is Here to Stay” and “Short Shorts”.
