RIP — Leon Russell
« on: November 13, 2016, 10:31:41 AM »
Sad to hear that Leon has passed away. One of the all-time greats. He played on many sessions for Jan & Dean during his tenure with the Wrecking Crew in the 1960s—for both hit records and album cuts. During a session for "The Anaheim, Azusa & Cucamonga Sewing Circle, Book Review and Timing Association" in 1964, Jan Berry asked Leon to switch to playing tack piano.

JAN BERRY: "Hey, hold it. Hold it! Hey Leon, would you play the tack piano on this?"

LEON: "Hold on."

MUSICIAN: "He's running all over the place."

HAL BLAINE: "He's like one of them dolls you buy, and you put water on it, it grows hair."

Aside from playing keyboards and other instruments, Leon Russell was also a talented arranger and songwriter.
