That covers the early stuff pretty good. The live Linda on Murrey the K is not really live. It's the recording of Linda with an audience in the background. But that's a good collection.

Did they actually do "Linda" live on Murry the K? It's a weird recording on the "Early Years." Murry introduces J&D, a band plays some background music, and you can hear Jan say "thank you." Up until then, it all sounds live...and then it goes into a recording of the original song. Even the audience noise sounds canned while the song plays. Did they actually do "Linda" live on the show? I would love to hear a live version of "Linda" from before the accident.

I bought a copy of "The Complete Early Years" in 2005 on e-bay. I thought it was impossible to wear out a CD, but I did it anyway.  I bought it because it had "Those Words" on it.  I'd made a copy of the CD on tape to play in my car, and of course, I've worn that out also.
Guess it is close to time to get a new CD, but I'll have to get a new playerfirst. Yep, I wore out it also.

interesting so far...
I'm assuming the quality of the 3 recordings listed  here are about the same.

so
songs missing from "the Complete Early Years" are

from  TEEN SUITE: 1958-1962 — Varese Sarabande, 1995
17. Tomorrow's Teardrops - Jan Berry - ('61)
20. Whole Lotta Lovin' - ('62)

from JAN & DEAN - [Re-Issue of 1960 Dore Album] — ERA, 1996

2. Judy - ('59) — JB, DT  single version
5. Oh Julie - ('60)

comments on these songs people?

and the "Complete Early Years"  has
24. Those Words
32. Your Heart Has Changed its Mind
33. Frosty the Snowman
34. Linda (Live at the Brooklyn Fox, Murray the 'K's Holiday Show 1963)
28. Gotta Getta Date (speeded up alt. take)
29. Gas Money (speeded up alt. take)
30. Judy (alt. album version)

which the other two cd's don't have..
Those Words & Your Heart Has Changed its Mind  I'm not familar with either.

so discounting Tomorrows Teardrops, because its just Jan, and recognizing that a version of Judy is available,
only  20. Whole Lotta Lovin' - ('62)  and  5. Oh Julie - ('60)  are totaling missing from the  "The Complete Early Years"

"Judy's An Angel" is the more fleshed-out version of "Judy."

"Julie" and "Oh Julie" are the same song.

"Those Words" words was the original B-side of "Heart & Soul" -- but it was removed for legal reasons, and replaced with "Midsummer Night's Dream" -- The inclusion of "Those Words" makes me think the Sparkletone thing might be a bootleg. "Those Words" was based on a song called "Tick Tock" by the Innocents (produced by Kim Fowley and Gary Paxton). Same melody as "Tick Tock," but "Those Words" did feature different lyrics. Nevertheless, there was tension between Lou Adler and Fowley, and the song was dropped.

"Your Heart Has Changed its Mind" is a Liberty Track (pre-Screen Gems), and was the flipside of "Tennessee" - ('62)

"Frosty the Snowman" is a Liberty track (pre-Screen Gems) and was the flipside of "She's Still Talkin' Baby Talk" - ('62). This was the final Jan & Dean single produced by Lou Adler.

Jan took over on the next single, "Linda."

Both Teen Suite and the reissue of the Dore album are class acts in the J&D reissue library.

It is unfortunate that "Those Words" faced legal issues and had to be pulled from the market.  It is a classy recording with some great harmony by J&D.  I consider it one of their best performances from their doo-wop era.

Mark, is there much documentation in Jan's archives on the pre-Liberty era?  Will the pre-Liberty years also be part of your sessionography?

Mark,
Do you know the story on WLL ?

It was a song they recorded in 1962, but never released.

There is some, but not as much as the later stuff.
