Schlock Rod Pt1 & Pt2
« on: February 18, 2010, 12:50:49 PM »
Am I the only one who really loves this song? Part 1 I find is more commercial, but I find when it's combined with Part 2 it makes a great, funny, and somewhat original idea for a song even more compelling.

Think about it, of all the songs in all the world, how many songs sound like Schlock Rod? How many make you laugh time and time again? There are none, it's unique, in a way that only Jan & Dean could make a record.

:) Mark

Dave Marsh ranked Part 1 at #952 on his list of the 1001 greatest singles ever made, in his book The Heart of Rock & Soul.

Steve Martin liked it so much , he turned it into "King Tut"! big late 70's hit.

Is that true? 2dean2?  It does sound similar, but did Steve Martin admit that?

Not to my knowledge Dean's known him  since b4 he was famous Did all his album covers [or most all]. Too much a simularity there. Like Surf City and Hey Little Cobra. to my knowledge no one has admitted those two are the same song . By the way I alway's thought "The Smothers Brothers" comedy was very J&D like , of course J&D copied after L&H as has everyother comedy duo since . But Steve Martin won an emmy as a writer for their tv show. Not saying there is a conection just that maybe Steve and Dean are of the same mind set comedic wise. ;)

All great answers, but you have all avoided the question. Do you enjoy the Schlock Rod songs?

Yes!  I love "Batman" too, so I might be weird.

Oh I like the song , it's pretty cool . I would like to hear it as one song though. I've read it was too long to be released as one so they did it as two. However it doesnt sound the same. Like it doesnt flow into part 2 right. Maybe Mark could shine some light on this.

Steve MArtin was a writer for the Smother Brothers. I've always enjoyed the J&D comedy bits, but  Dean dismisses it as being too tired to record a real song.

I love the Schlock Rod songs, too!  I first heard Part 1 when I was in high school--I found the original Drag City single which has this on the flip side.  I thought it was hilarious; I'd never heard anything like it before!  Part 2 I liked even more--I found that one on the 2-record set "Gotta Take That One Last Ride."   In the same vein, I also love their Batman LP and their two original acetates of Filet of Soul (not the "plunder the vaults" version that Liberty ended up releasing after Jan's accident).  I agree that Jan & Dean have a great Laurel & Hardy/Smothers Brothers sense of humor ;D

I have a 2 track 15 IPS tape I put together years ago splicing pt.2 onto the end of pt.1 ... it sounds like one continuous song since I meticulously spliced it at the right spot before the fade out. I guess it would be easier to do this nowadays with digital editing. I used the mono version on the Anthology album (vinyl). At least I think that's where it came from.
