Yes. The arranger listed on the union contracts was the arranger on hand in the studio. Jan was often listed as such. But in this case, George and Jan collaborated as arrangers for the album. Sometimes you'll see notes like, "No arranger or copyist this session."

If you look at AFM sheets for the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson was usually not listed as the leader.

I gotcha! So the contracts don't always say everyone involved nor do they always state the actual producer.  Thanks Mark

Anyone read enough of the book to form an opinion ? I've read it and liked it.
Will share my thought good and bad (minor things) when I get a chance to look it over again.
 All in all though Mark did a fantastic job. I'm sure the most info anyone has written about an entertainer.

I read most of it several weeks ago. Then I put it down to concentrate on a final I had in grad school. I picked it up again recently and now I'm on the epilogue. The first 2 pages of the epilogue shows just how important Jan was to music in the 60s    If anyone from the Rock Hall would read those pages. There'd be no question about Jan and Dean being in the Hall. Fantastic book! Heartbreaking to read past 1966. It wasn't big news at the time of accident. It appears no one really knew how seriously he was injured. Except people close to him. So it was just a rock star getting injured. If he had died. I think it would've been big news for sure.

An interesting question from the book: would Jan have been a doctor? I'd like to submit no. He had a choice to concentrate on school or make records. He did both. He made average grades and made well above average music. He could have put more time into his studies and made As and Bs. But he ultimately chose music. I think his choice would have always been music. Just an opinion.

In the interview, Mark says that the Beach Boy's Surfin used the hooks from Baby Talk. Mike Love has said the same thing.
But it seems to me that Heart and Soul may have played a bigger part. It was #1 in L.A. that summer and the hook from Surfin(which was recorded right after Heart and Soul was a hit) sounds a lot like it. Even more than Baby Talk.
