Hey Mark
I can't believe how much info you have in this book. I'm blown away with every detail.
I've skipped around from the accident to surf city being recorded. I was up til 3:45 am this morning reading about Jan driving in april of 67.
Just a Great effort. Really a super job. So happy my wife ordered from McFarland.
Thanks for time and energy put into this. Hope this maybe will get a box set out for Jan & Dean.
I would love to hear Jan's version Of Shut Down that's in the vaults.
Thanks again       B

Thanks Burton . . . Glad you're enjoying it.

Yes, Mark...a great effort...now I see why it took so long.  It's going to take me almost as long to get through the whole thing! Hopefully, a copy will fall into the hands of Tom Hanks so he can make a proper movie.

Damn! I should've gone through the publisher. 20% off plus they've already sent out the books. Amazon hasn't even emailed me yet on delivery date

Mine arrived today. Goodness it looks comprehensive. The book we have all been waiting for. I'm going to put aside some quality time to read and look at the pictures / diagrams etc. Thanks Mark.

I have so many questions and I know Mark doesn't have time to answer them, but let me try lol

On Sidewalk Surfin, apparently Jan did write some of it but couldn't receive credit because it was published by Sea of Tunes. Outside of a few lyrics, did Jan write the music for the instrumental break? It's different from Catch a Wave, so I figured Jan came up with it.

Also, who is doubling with Jan on Honolulu Lulu? Tony?

On "Sidewalk Surfin'," the trumpet, flugelhorn, and French horn parts were all fully notated by Jan. The tenor sax part was notated except for the solo. "Solo" was indicated over four bars of slashes, and then the specific notes began again. It's possible that Jan could have suggested or voiced a melody for the solo, but it was up to the sax player, using his own creativity, to come up with the solo and make it work with the other specific horn parts. It's quite possible that Jan contributed to the lyrics, but any songwriting credit was out of the question due to his Screen Gems contract.

I don't know who, if anyone, doubled with Jan on "Honolulu Lulu."
