“Honolulu Lulu” — In honor of the great Glen Campbell, who played guitar on this session at Western Recorders in Hollywood on June 13, 1963. Co-written, arranged, and produced by Jan Berry (for Jan & Dean). This is the raw track without the “Hawaiian guitar” overdubs, from Jan Berry’s personal collection—lots of great guitar riffs happening. Other studio musicians on this date included Hal Blaine and Earl “the Pearl” Palmer (playing drums together in unison); Leon Russell (keyboards); Billy Strange (guitar); Bill Pitman (Danelectro six-string bass guitar); and Ray Pohlman (bass). This and many other sessions are chronicled in my forthcoming book.

Now you know why I stated that the instrumental backing track was far superior to "Surf City."

Brian Wilson was blown away by this track, and he had nothing to do with it. Jan Berry belongs in the Hall of Fame!

I think there are similarities but it's different. I think most producers have certain tendencies. Phil Spector produced several songs that sounded similar. Chuck Berry- I have to hear him sing different lyrics to know its not the same song.

I just have to say i really dig this backing track. So clear and your can hear the sliding of the hand up and down the fret board.. Thanks for sharing Mark.. This made me smile for a few days. b

Glad you enjoyed it, Burton. The track is from a reference dub (acetate), the label for which will appear as an illustration in my book.
