J&D two orig albums, think about it..
« on: April 04, 2015, 01:07:56 PM »
Being that J&D were mostly a singles act the only all-the-way-thru orig albums were Drag City and Ride the Wild Surf; take linda surfin and surf city were just covers packaged with the hit single and same can be said with the deadmans/new girl album and the little old lady from pasadena, unless ya count the cuts written by brian, christian, altfeld, gibson and the fantastic baggys to have been written for them...¿?

Dead Man's Curve/The New Girl In School is a solid original LP.

Jan wrote the music for all of the following album cuts: "Bucket T," "Rockin' Little Roadster," "My Mighty G.T.O.," "Barons, West L.A.," and "Hey Little Freshman."

Those are among the best album cuts in the Jan & Dean canon (and a variation of "My Mighty G.T.O." was a single B-side).

Jan withheld his name from these songs in an effort to publish them with Brinkley Music (a ruse), and then transfer them to Trousdale Music. That effort failed because Jan was legally obligated to Screen Gems as a songwriter. He was signed to the company and was not allowed to work with other publishers or production companies.

Jan also wrote the music for "The Little Old Lady (from Pasadena)," but purposely withheld his name for the reasons described above.

He lost his credits officially on all of these due to a 1964 lawsuit by Screen Gems and the resulting "Settlement Agreement." Jan's credits were finally legally restored in 2002.

Yeah but whats credited on the orig album is what matters, not 38 yrs later...so being that deadmans curve was already on the drag city, new girl the flip side and a remake from gonna hustle you, 3window coupe given to the rip chords and bgas an instrumental...the album existed as a rush-release to back the single, same goes for lil old lady from pasadena, in otherwords drag city and ride the wild surf were their only orig albums that didnt just exist to back the single, that sound better?

Wrong . . . Jan wrote the music in '64, regardless of the label credits. It was documented at the time, and he was called out for it by Screen Gems.

If Jan and Dean were just a singles act I wouldn't have listened to them for so many years. I love some of the album tracks - including the ones listed above. I had to personally import most of these to the UK as only 6 of the albums were released over here - and this was before the internet. It cost me a fortune!

Its clear that most effort went into the singles but Drag City is an almost perfect album for me. There are great tracks on all their albums. I understand the legalities of the law suit but am surprised (an d I know Jan lost out) that the outcome was not just about Screen Gems but about a public acknowledgement that Jan wrote the music. I do think it has diluted his recognition as most people will not know about the history.

No I agree,, Drag City and Ride the Wild Surf were/are both solid albums while Deadmans/new girl and Lil Old Lady are contractual albums they made to back the singles with covers written by their then team of Brian, Roger, Altfeld, Gibson and the Fantastic Baggys.

Josh. You don't listen very well. The Dead Mans Curve/New Girl album consisted of mostly originals co-written by Jan Berry. The Little Old Lady album was mostly originals. 5 songs were co-written by Jan. Other songs were written by his team. But the one thing both albums have in common was the awesome production and arrangements by Jan. Jan only wrote 5 songs on the Little Old Lady album but he produced his ass off.  Both albums were very well produced and Jan co-wrote 15 of the 24 songs on those albums. Try to understand. He's not on the credits for all the songs he wrote music to!

Here is a copy of page 1 of the Jan Berry BMI works. These are official Jan Berry Compositions. As you can see, there are a couple of songs (Bucket T and Barons West LA) that were not credited to Jan on the album but he clearly gets official credit now. If you search the entire Jan Berry catalog on BMI, you'll see the other songs from that album and Little Old Lady from Pasadena as well.

I found this on Ebay. Jan's name was on the original Bucket T single by Ronny and the Daytonas, just like Mark said. It's funny how his name could just be pulled off the credits like that. Josh, if you still on this site, this should be proof that Jan really did write all of those songs.

Jan & Dean easily made more than two original albums. IMO DRAG CITY and DEAD MAN'S CURVE/NEW GIRL IN SCHOOL were their best, but this should not discount albums like THE LITTLE OLD LADY FROM PASADENA ,BATMAN and FOLK & ROLL. Heck, I think the POP SYMPHONY album works a nice mood piece, as well as a calling card for the talents of Jan Berry.
