Your favourite Jan & Dean Collection?
« on: January 27, 2010, 04:30:30 AM »
Ok, whats your favourite Jan & Dean collection, be it greatest hits or just a collection of their songs?

I think for me it now has to be the "Complete Liberty Singles Collection" in glorious mono. Everything you could ever want from the Liberty era.

:) Mark

I really like the Complete Liberty collection too. However, a close second for me is The Anthology Album.

Anthology was my first Jan & Dean collection. I absolutely wore it out. However, I have to give the Liberty Collection the edge because Anthology contained two covers of Beach Boy hits(????) instead of Jan Berry's 1965-66 productions.
How can you have other people's hits on your Anthology? and not include 2 top 30 hits from your catalog? But Dean did include some Filet of Soul on side 4 which was great!

I'm too bias as I was involved on the Complete Liberty Singles. I wore out the Anthology album too. Love side 4, and the booklet notes.

Would've been the best of both worlds if the Complete Liberty Singles had been released as a two record vinyl set.

Complete Liberty Singles - I like Gotta Take that One Last Ride too. Mono versions of 3 Window Coupe and others. An incomplete package with some odd exclusions and inclusions but equally some great mono album tracks.

I also love the "Ride The Wild Surf" LP compilation (with Fantastic Baggies as final bonus track). Sadly it's not been released on CD, but the selection of tracks, mono and stereo mixes just seems perfect. It was also my very first Jan & Dean LP!

They all hold something special for me. Finding the first of the DMC/NGNS "negitive album in 98 after looking for 10 years was a treat ! I do like the last of the Surf City to Drag City cd as it has the studio stuff at the last especially the DMC  session him asking Leon Russel  if he was gonna play full chords this take meanning there is 2 different piano parts on DMC, Giving Billy Strange J&D guitar style intsructions and you can hear him say something like "And Glen you just give it what ya got" I would love to hear him giving Tommy Tedesco some instruction's.

I think my favorites have always been the 2 1980's compilations: A Surfers Dream and I Gotta Drive just for variety  and for the inclusion of various album cuts. I just wish they had included "Dragstrip Girl".

"All The Hits: From Surf City To Drag City"

Wonderful stereo sound, first time stereo, remixes, unreleased material, studio chat (Hostility City, take...), radio promos -- It's packed with great material.

"All The Hits: From Surf City To Drag City" is nice, but I wouldn't call it a "collection". More of a rarities disk.

I guess my favorite "collection" would be Golden Hits Volume Three.

I don't like that recently released mono singles collection. Just doesn't sound good and most of the songs on disk 1 aren't my thing. I traded mine in at FYE for $8.75 store credit... and nope I didn't even make a "backup" copy.
