Saw Dean Tonight!
« on: November 01, 2014, 07:12:13 PM »
Saw Dean at the VIP of Jan & Dean and the Surf City Allstars this evening.  Dean signed my "Save For A Rainy Day " album, "Surfs Up. Dean".  He also signed my sons guitar and for my other son he signed a 1957 Chieftain, the yearbook from University High on page 95 where Dean is pictured with the football team.  Dean is very kind and witty.  Great guy!

The concert had three Jan & Dean songs for every fifteen Beach Boy song.  The Beach Boys songs just didn't stop coming the whole evening.  I was very sad about that aspect of the concert but it was still great to attend and see Dean perform on stage. This concert was a big contrast to seeing Jan & Dean in 1980 when all but one of the songs was a Jan & Dean song, Barbabra Ann.  I understand the band feels they have to entertain the masses but the Jan & Dean music is very diluted.  The average age of the crowd was about 65 years old and Dean made jokes about Viagra and walkers during the concert.  I questioned a few of the people there and they were not really up on Jan & Dean at all.  It was just a night out for them.  So there you have it.  My night in nutshell. Surf's Up!

Yeah they just want to do the top hit's . But I would rather hear all "B" sides as opposed to BB stuff.
Barbara Ann was a Regents song . But J & D did a more Ca sound . The BB with Dean on lead copied the J&D version as everything else.

I was thinking of the Barbara Ann cut from the Beach Boys Party Album.  I am not a big Beach Boys fan. I think of the Beach Boys as a Jan & Dean rip off band that just got luckier when it came to being in the spot light. They were certainly much less talented than Jan & Dean. So to hear Dean doing so many Beach Boys songs tonight was disappointing.

Glad you had a good time!  At least Dean is out there doing it still, rather than not doing it. But I know what you mean.  Way back in 1986 at the World's biggest beach party,  where Jan and Dean were the headliners,  some people in the crowd commented that J and D played too many BB songs.  But apparently Dean must have listened to the suits that said "If you play more BB songs than J&D songs statistics show that you will get more people to come to your concert" or something like that.
Sometimes wished that they had more confidence in their own catalog of songs.  Oh well...

Actually, it may not be the suits. Dean has always done that. In 1977, his remakes were half BB songs. In 1971, he put 3 BB covers on the Anthology Album.

Good point Jdman.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed seeing Dean and appreciate him coming out to see us fans and take the time to sign things etc.

You know if you think about it , All the Beach Boys music is Jan & Dean music . At least the Ca sound stuff so by Dean doing Beach Boys songs he is really continuing Jan's legacy.
No Jan & Dean No Beach Boys

Got to see Dean this year in SC and my 16 year old son wore a J&D 79' shirt.  Dean was so full of joy seeing a teen wearing that shirt, that he felt in tears.  He complimented my son at least 2-3 times and then he said that he has one of those shirts somewhere in his closet.  Although, they played some BB and also J&D music, my son told me that the J&D music really rocks.
