favorite Dean vocal
« on: January 17, 2010, 09:21:18 AM »
I think some of my comments about Dean on earlier threads may have been misinterpreted. I know that without Dean, there was no Jan & Dean. His humor was a major contibution to the act, but also his vocal.I'd like to submit my favorite songs with some Dean vocal leads. Baby Talk, There's a Girl, Linda, The Restless Surfer, Summer Means Fun, Yesterday, Yellow Balloon, and Like a Summer Rain.

My favourite is the Legendary Masked Surfers' version of Gonna Hustle You - especially the fade-out....

Yes - Yesterday - a Jan and Dean track that lots of non-Jan and Dean fans love. A classy vocal and a great production.

If I am allowed a second bite of the cherry I will also nominate the version of Like A Summer Rain from the Silver Summer album. Its one remake that IMHO surpasses the original!

Cheers

I've always loved Pocketful Of Rainbows.  Such a sweet little song surprisingly from the movie G. I. Blues.

Owen, If you have never heard the stereo version of the song, you owe it to yourself to do so...

The Silver summer version is indeed excellent, but the original stereo version ( less intrusive sound effects) is real good too!

Actually, years ago, I used to own that strange 2 LP collection that had it on. It was the first time I had ever heard it. Memory being what it is I can no longer remember how it compares to the mono version, but I do remember liking it at the time (and wondering what is was and where it came from).

I've alway's thought Dean was a better all around singer than Jan. More of a range. And although he did'nt always provide the falsetto on all the J&D stuff he did enough to say he can sing it. I really think Dean is a great artist. I would love to buy an original work from him . Would'nt even have to be J&D or Calif related . Although most draw or paint what they know so I'm thinking his stuff would be somehow Ca related even the asian piece on his site may have something to do with the amount of asian culture in Ca.

I have to disagree. I don't think Dean had a better voice than Jan.It was different. When they were live, I thought Jan was better. On TAMI, Jan saves it for them. Neither one were awesome vocalist, which is why I think Jan's production was so important. he made those records sound great even with average singers.

Owen, that collection was called "Summer means Fun" and was released in '82 on cbs records.
It was mostly  Bruce Johnston or Bruce and Terry based tunes with three exceptions, Dean's  "Like a Summer Rain " stereo mix,
Johnny River's take on "Help Me Ronda" (spelled that way!)  and Flash Cadillac's version of "Pipeline".

decent and somewhat obscure collection... high lights for me was Dean's track and a Rip Chord (Bruce) track named "Beach Girl" that was otherwise unknown to me..

JDMAN  I was only speaking of the range of Dean's voice . Yes live Jan 's  sing was better. And it may have taken Jan less time to lay his vocal track than Dean in the studio but I really dont know.

My favourite Dean vocal is probably "Taste Of Rain", I like Dean's vocals on all his leads actually except "Yesterday" which I find hard to listen to. I think in the doo-wop era of things Dean's leads were generally better than Jan's, and I agree that Dean had more of a vocal range than Jan.

On the live stuff, Dean can hold his own, as shown on some of those Mike & Dean concerts and of course on the live "One Summer Night" album.

:) Mark
