Right from the Start

What do you guys know about this song? It sounds like the Barons-early stuff. You can hear Jan as the leader. I don't think I hear Dean. Any information on this one?

Its a song by Jan & Arnie That is a garage demo. Joe Lubin and Don Altfeld are also lending their voice since Jan is experimenting on more complex vocals.

Thanks Kann!  Jan was barely 17 at this point? Makes me laugh a little when people say Jan got everything from Brian.

I have never heard that Jan got anything from Brian other than the unfinished version of Surf City and otherwise that Jan taught Brian a lot about producing/arranging songs.

That's correct Mike. But there are some that still say things like that. Usually it's the Brian Wilson fans or historians. But you're right, most people that are  unbiased are recognizing Jan's talents and that he and Brian were a mutual give and take relationship.

True! I heard others saying it also, but Brian himself said in an interview,  that he learned a lot from Jan Berry and that he sees Jan a studio genius.    Btw.  I really like this song 'Right from the start' and actually the entire Jan & Arnie era.  Somehow, I believe that if Jan did not had that accident in 1966, he would had eventually went solo or teamed up with someone else.  I could be wrong, but I do think that Jan was getting tired of Dean.  He recorded many songs by himself and still credited Dean.

Jan would easily made it as a producer on his own but when it comes to the act it would have been highly unlikely that he would have made it on his own. It's like Abbott & Costello once the partnership ended they both failed miserably. As for Jan getting tired of Dean, he was living with Jan up until the accident.
Let's face it people they both needed each other to make it.

Who's Costello Jan or Dean?
This is almost as bizarre as your Pet Sounds posting.
Until next time

1) Costello - Dean he's funnier. Although they swap roles now and then.
2) Someone's gotta tell it like it is.
