Jan and Dean Story Dean Torrence music Phase two
« on: February 04, 2014, 08:21:12 AM »
I read an old post, Silver Summer, in regards to re recorded J & D material only to be more confused than I already was about these re recordings. The last entry on the post even confused things further when mention of a bluegrass version of Jennie Lee featuring Jan was made. What is the difference between the J & D Story recordings, that is the 10 songs, the soundtrack LP released in Australia and the Dean Torrence Music Phase Two Lp released on JVC Japan. Are all the tracks on the legendary masked surfers cd just the silver summer lp. Where does the  bluegrass version of Jennie lee come in I don't think I've ever heard it . Is Jan on any of these and which were used in the movie, to confuse things further I read a post on a blog stating Bruce Davidson and Richard Hatch sang Barbara Ann in the movie. Is there a full version of little lady lover
Cheers

Hi,

I think it was me that mentioned the bluegrass version of Jennie Lee. If it was, then this is separate to any confusion about the 80s re-recordings. The "bluegrass" version is on Dean's compilation The Legendary Masked Surfer Unmasked and is credited to Dean Torrence. The cover states that it is previously unreleased and recorded in 1985. It is produced by Dean and Gary Griffin.

Cheers

Hi,
I had a look at the post titled The 1977 Re Recordings. The post about the blue grass version of Jennie Lee was made by Aljolson59. I've had a listen to the track it does sound bluegrass and it does appear as though Jans on this. The recording made in 85 and produced by Dean  and Gary Griffin indicates that this together with Baby Talk are from the Silver Summer sessions.
.
I think I've worked out the  Jan and Dean Story / Deadmans Curve 1977 re recordings.
1. The 10 tracks from the J & D Story plus
2. Seven tracks from the Dean Torrence Music Phase Two LP, Wipeout, Barbara Ann,  Get A Job,  A Teenager In Love,  I Only Have Eyes For You,  One Summer Night, Pipeline. The other five tracks , Surf City,  Drag City,  Ride The Wild Surf,  Sidewalk Surfin,  Surfin USA are recordings made in 80/81 for the album released on JVC in  81.
3. The other track from 77 is Rythym Of The Rain as referred to on the original post by David Beard.  This one can be found on bootlegs or rarities albums.  It usually gets listed as an out take from the Save For A Rainy Day Lp.  I don't think Dean recorded this one for the sessions as it is not included in the Sundazed resisue.
.
The Deadmans Curve Lp is not required as all this has got is five of the J & D Story tracks plus the  seven tracks I mentioned from the Phase Two Lp.
.
Now all I need to work out are the Silver Summer  Masked Surfers Recordings.
