Dore 101 Cover and Album - Reproduction vs. Original?
« on: April 02, 2013, 08:02:17 PM »
Are there any visible differences between the original Dore 101 album and the 1990's reproduction versions? The reproduction I have appears to be a direct copy.

Here is a link to the EBAY ad that I purchased it from Mark.  It has good pictures.

Where's Frank Kisko when you need him?

As best I can tell, the back cover of the original included the line "Albums by Container-Kraft, Los Angeles"  . . . in the lower right-hand corner . . . below the fan club box and to the right of the Doré street address.

Container-Kraft did the packaging.

Thank you Mark. This album sold on EBAY for $575.00 and was purported to be an original.  I do not see any differenced between this one and the reproduction I purchased.  The reason I ask is that I would like to purchase an original for my collection but want to make sure I don't pay good money for a reproduction.

It looks like my original that I bought in 1980 for $150.00. I wouldn't pay $575.00. That's a bit much!

I guess the poster is the big deal when it comes to rarity.

Similar problem.

I bought the Dore 101 LP in 1978. I have always assumed it was a reissue but I may be wrong? It was bought from a very reputable shop so it can't be a bootleg (?). It looks identical to the 101 original you are discussing. It  has DORE LPD 101 SIDE 1 and the numbers  2160 scratched onto the vinyl (end grooves) on side one with similar markings on side two (number 2161). There is nothing written under the National Fan Club box. 1481 Vine Street, los Angeles, California appears centrally at the bottom of the back cover.
I am thinking of selling the LP but I do not want to mislead or make false claims. Was there a Dore 101 reissue that could have made it onto High Street shelves in late 1978 in the UK? I am 100% sure when I bought it.

I, too, bought a copy in 1978 for $80. I don't recall it having a poster, but it was in otherwise in nice shape. I mentioned paying $80 for it to Jan a couple years later and he seemed surprised. I can't imagine anyone doing a resissue or a bootleg on it back then, at least not putting that much effort into making it look like an original. But, I could be wrong. The album was less than 20 years old at the time, so it's plausible that some nice copies were still floating around.

There was a reissue made of the album.  Most of what is sold on EBAY is a copy and not an original. Here is the back of an original album that I purchased recently.

Yeah, that one has the Container-Kraft reference.

LOL . . . A well-loved and well-used copy of the album.

Frank would know any and all variations.

Thanks for helping. I bought my copy in 1978 from HMV Bristol, UK which was at that time was a big commercial record store so I never thought it was a bootleg. It cost more than a typical LP of that time but "imports" always cost more. Mine does NOT have the extra print under the fan club logo. Unlike many of the other reissues from that period, the actual label is the same/similar to the original. I think it must have been a legitimate reissue (1978) but a great deal of care went into making it look like the original. In my experience the cardboard making up the sleeve suggests 1970s rather than 1960. All my original LPs from that period have a thicker sleeve. When/if I sell it I shall make clear that it is a rare reissue from 1978 and NOT a bootleg - do you think this is fair?

Yes, that is fair.  I have one of those also.  They sell on EBAY for $15.00 to $20.00.
