I wish the interview lasted longer. The Honolulu lulu comment is unexpected. I never hear that song get a lot of love. But obviously, Brian was impressed with its production. I heard that Gary Usher, Brian, and others hung around the studio when Jan was doing the Surf City album. It sounds like they were all taking notes on how to produce and Honolulu Lulu was a good one to learn from.

I love "Honolulu Lulu" as well.  It's just a fun song with the surf effects, vocals, subject.
