I'm not sure about who's version came out first . But I was talking to someone at a record show and had a Jan & Dean (with THE SOUL SURFERS) Album . And a guy asked if I was a Grass Roots fan due to them originally being Jan & Dean's studio singers and players . Before using a "real" group.

Jan & Dean's version of the Sloan-Barri composition "Where Were You When I Needed You" came out first, in November 1965.

The Grass Roots version was released on the Dunhill label in May 1966.

Had potential as a single itself.
