...thank you for "thanking" me on the

"footage" 2dean2

...shake ally....I bring another type of footage (Lord willing...more of what you requested too....in the future )

...here goes.....

Working towards a hometown concert of “Jan & Dean” starting the fall of 1994, I met Jan and Dean the first time in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area where they were performing a  two-night appearance at a large casino.

After a late winter and a spring of communication with Jan and Gertie via letters and phone conversations….and an all too short 3 day mini tour of a trio of Jan & Dean concerts in Illinois and Iowa the following first half of summer…

Jan & Dean came to Union Station in St. Louis, nearing the end of August.

The venue had the audience bring their own chairs.  My daughters and I set ours up that afternoon.  As we sat in front of the stage…watching the “Bel Air Bandits” do their sound check….to our happiness…Jan & Dean joined them out by the stage.

Once all their work was finished, I could not resist going “over” towards them and asking for a few pictures…which they obliged.  ( Major fun, fun, fun!! )

But then…something so wonderful happened that…it really changed my life forever.  I was about to take a walk that I can easily describe as “the walk of a life time”

After enjoying the precious moments of picture taking with Jan & Dean and my daughters….Dean spoke words that transported me from “here” to “there”….

He asked me if I wanted to help Jan to his room.

I know I do not have to announce here….what my answer was.  I know that.

But that walk with Jan through Union station mall was, to my estimation, a whole nother dimension.

I know that I wrote about this when this board was the way it was before.  Before it was changed more than a year ago.  It wasn’t easy to hit the button that sent it “out” to the internet, at that time.  I told way more than just this part.

For some reason…I hesitate to write again.  What do you think?

( i may take this off when i get home from work...if it seems it wasn't right)

 :)

Thank you!

Yes...Jan's extreme natural talent he gave us in Phase I was remarkable!!  And that musical ability that he still carried and used in his Phase II work as well.

There was NO stopping that man.  Once he got Arnie and Dean and the others going in that garage.... hitting upon all that motivation inside of him--first finding it in music and then putting as much or even more energy into his embraced chosen field of study--medicine--he was a FORCE.

According to Mr. Sloan on the "Bob Morgan" program tonight...he was an inspiration to those fellow musicians...and even though he drove them hard...they could sense "where he was coming from" and just truly wanted to give him their all as they worked with him....cool!!

So there is definitely a super legacy in that part.  And Mark has caught that and is obviously filled with what it takes to bring that completely to "light" and the forefront of the music world / community!  Go Mark...Go Mark...GO!!!

( But please!....remember how much a part of that legacy, with Jan, is his partner and friend, Dean O Torrence .... i believe you will)  ( an respectively keep him "in" your work... i want so to encourage you with that .... as he wants the same thing for Jan )  (and I, personally, want that for Dean as well)
( are you sure that totally valuable reel to reel recording of them singing doesn't go first dibbs to Dean?  at least if he wants it...not that you can't use it......all my opinion here - What a respectful gesture if you offered ownership to him, since i know it was presented to you for this work)
_________________________________________________________

Then....there is the legacy of Phase II that i carry "here"

Jan's "legacy of love" and I gotta do something with it.

It wasn't  just "in" him  ...it was around him and with him....and, OH BOY!, i felt it "in" him and around him...... :)

....there's so many of us who did....i know

This legacy did not just come from inside himself and his actions either (though soooo much DID), but also came through in the precious way others were with him, on his side....helping him, working with him and demonstrating love with him.

Therefore....on Facebook I am working on something special to continue what was started here when i wrote the "entry" on March 26th....a few days ago.

At least....I am "working" on it.

I will let you know.

Mary,

Dean has no rightful claim of ownership of Joe Lubin's reel tape. It belongs to Lubin's estate or family . . . and besides that, it originally came into Lubin's possession through Jan Berry.

Dean is merely a voice on the tape . . . along with Arnie, etc.

Dean probably already has a copy . . . In fact, Dean might well have stuff on tape from the early days that would blow all of our minds.

...hi Mark

Yes...it may be true legally...Dean has no ownership to these invaluable reels.  I'm sorry if I made it sound that he might (in my opinion).  What i was hoping for ...was to persuade you to that he is far more than "a voice" on that tape.

When Jan poured all that effort into capturing their voices...it was a boy's dreaming at work.  It went beyond that....as we alll soooooooo happily now know.  His talent was emerging and growing during this process.  The day that Jan turned these over to Joe, I am surmising, even he didn't realize (if this was done in the years they were created) their value.  Plus, that had to be a necessary step to grasp what lay ahead.

And now, because of your goal, you have them in your possession.  It is a worthwhile task you're working on.

Perhaps one of the intricate parts of this work, is to bring to Dean the respect and honor due him.  He as, one of those voices on the tape, which later became THE voice that blended with Jan's to come across all our air waves....and land on the pages of history as "Jan & Dean" -  deserves something much more than the ordinary, "whatever-is-expected."

Therefore, i said, as a "respectful gesture," you may decide to offer him these reels.  No one knew, till so many years later, their worth...if these are the actual reels that Jan and the guys laid down their harmonies on....even if they are a spliced, overlaid, finished product Jan created....i consider them "original."

Him (Dean) having a "copy" of them....cannot serve as substitute for the honor of bringing them "back" home to him.....through your hands.

Getting across to Dean your respect....is a goal of this heart....

...Happy Birthday, Mark...45
God bless you and yours (both family and work)
in Jesus's name   :)

It wasn't close....even the door to the mall from the stage area, at Union Station...St. Louis, Missouri.....nearing the end of August....1995.  And it was HOT as well.  Like Bob says on page 263 (hard cover), paragraph 8, "It was never easy for Jan" to walk.  But....like i have pointed out in another thread, Jan wanted the exercise.

The reel tapes do not belong to me . . . not mine to give. I had them transferred to digital, and they were sent back to Joe Lubin long before he passed away.

Jan got a great deal of joy out of listening to them after I had them transferred to disc :)
