How many songs?
« on: February 06, 2011, 11:56:33 PM »
I suppose I was thinking again about the unfairness of Jan and Dean not being in the Hall of fame. It got me wondering just how many songs Jan had written? In terms of output it must be well up there. I was listening again to the really early stuff and there are some great tunes. I know life is short but has anyone ever added up just how many songs (including instrumentals?)

Haven't had time to go through these in any detail but it speaks for itself. Well over 100 and some great hits, some near misses as well as some hidden gems.

Roll on the box set!

I added some chart numbers to make the list a little easier to digest.

Kook . . . Reading is fundamental. Comprehension is maybe a little more challenging. Jan co-wrote those songs in 1964 but his name did not appear on the DMC/NGIS label because he purposely withheld it, trying to place the publishing with another company. That stunt backfired. Screen Gems knew Jan had written the songs while under contract and they called him out on it. The result was the official loss of the credits, not merely their initial absence from the disc label.

Jan's credit, however, remained intact for Ronny and the Daytonas' release of "Bucket 'T'."

Sonny Curtis single I don't think I've ever come accross that one. Is Jans involvement referenced anywhere else. Must of missed it.
Until next time

Is "Right From the Start" by Jan & Arnie written by Jan Berry? I know it was never offically released but a great song that shows off his incredible writting talents even back in 1958

Kann, it's not officially listed on BMI as a song he composed. But that may just mean he didn't officially send it in. He could have written it.

Black Sea, great find on the Sonny Curtis record!

Yes, Jan officially arranged both sides of the Sonny Curtis disc. This happened as a result of his production contract with Screen Gems. Like Colpix, Dimension was a label affiliated with Screen Gems (having been founded  by Don Kirshner and Al Nevins).

Yes, and Arnie's distinctive lead voice is not present on the recording. It's more of a group recording, and some of the vocalists were African American.

"Cherish My Love" was officially copyrighted to Jan Berry and Don Altfeld in 1960. It was recorded and released by the Glens.
