Thanks for the reply, 11Bees!  I had to dig my single out to take a look at the run-out grooves.  The A-side (Like A Summer Rain) on mine has ML7950 etched at the 4 o clock position and THANX DZ at the 7 o clock. The B-side has ML 7951 at 9 o clock, DOT + SJM with a heart at 8 o clock, and THANX DZ at the top.  I hope we're not boring everybody to death here hahaha!  The really funny thing is that on the A-side, it says "produced by Dean Torrance"--Dean's last name is misspelled on his own record label!!! The other side says "produced by Jan Berry"--since that is his song.

DOT + SJM must mean Dean O. Torrence + Sonnie J. Morrow, one of his girlfriends during the Jan & Dean years. I'm not sure about DZ unless it's Don Zirilli.  Did Dean know him in 1966?

11Bees, I'm truly stumped by your "double A-side" single! It doesn't seem to be mentioned in any discographies--actually I can't find anything on it anywhere.  Maybe Mark or David Beard can help us on this one. 

Sounds like your friend has a good sampling of other copies of this record.  I wonder if his have all the same etchings that mine does? I found it interesting that the etchings on your copy are different.  Leave it to somebody like me to get all jacked up by such small details LOL!

     Yeah, I also can't find anything about it and, at first, I thought it might be a boot since it's in amazing condition, but what a weird boot for someone to make, so now  I'm pretty sure it's legit. My buddy runs a little record store in the basement of a bar called East End in Portland OR and he gave this to me before I moved across the country (to Pennsylvania) so I can't check on the run-out grooves on his other copies. Well, i guess I could e-mail him...

Well...i find those records VERY interesting you guys have. 

Are you saying Dean put those special things right in the pressing of the groves, ripplewine?

And 11bees has a very rare copy altogether....hope you find out more.

Have your buddy check the others, please.  If not...I know someone very well in Portland.

Mary--yes, Dean etched the master copy himself with an electric pencil, so that all the other copies pressed from it have it too.  If you have Mark Passmore's book, there's an article in the back on J&D record etchings--they did this on a number of records--you might have some of them. Look between the end of the cut and the label.  On this single, mine is from the third and final batch of pressings based on the etchings on it, according to the article.

11bees--According to the article, yours is from the first batch.  I think you have a real rarity there!  I could be wrong, but I don't think the record is an error;  I don't see how both sides could be the same by accident--I wonder if it's some kind of promo that got a regular label by mistake?

Dean and Zaccaglini got busted by Screen Gems for their unauthorized deal with Columbia, and their illegal use of the name "Jan & Dean"  in '67. That's why the Columbia version of Save For A Rainy Day never saw an official release.

Speaking of dead-wax etchings . . .

Rhino Handmade continued the tradition on the new Vinyl Edition of Carnival of Sound (2010)

Side 1 says "Grasshopper" (one of the original titles for "Mulholland").

Side 2 says "Don't Drop It" (one of the oldies Jan was working on before the accident).

Thank you for the info on Don Zaccaglini, Mark---I didn't know that he was involved with SFARD.  I'll have to get my COS record out and look at the etchings you pointed out.  Thanks for the tip on that one! I think that article on etchings used to be online somewhere.
