J&D’s skateboard
« on: August 07, 2020, 07:59:33 AM »
I received a notice on Facebook that musician Wayne Fontana of the Mindbenders passed away. The article was in The Sun, a British newspaper, August 7, 2020. Scrolling down to check out the pictures, I came across one of Wayne, holding of all things, a Jan and Dean Sidewalk Surfer. Not sure how he got his hands on one of these. But to see a J&D skateboard with a British rocker, I thought it was kind of odd. Actually, to see anybody with one of those boards has to be a rare sight. Any thoughts out there?

I don't know, but my guess would be that Jan or Dean gave him one. According to Dean, the boards never made it beyond the promotional stage. Dean rode one on The TAMI Show. Wayne's board also looks used, with scuff marks on the logo from riding it.

Cool photo . . .

R.I.P. Wayne . . . and thanks for the music.

That is a great photo. Thanks for posting it. Actually, if Keith Moon had been holding the skateboard, it would have been more logical. But we still would be wondering how he got one. Rest In Peace Wayne, and thanks for the music. As a side note, guitarist Eric Stewart was with Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders and took over lead vocals when Wayne left. Stewart eventually became a member of 10cc which was one of Deans favorite groups (according to a Sunshine Music fanzine article).
