Universal does, however, still have all of the source material from the two concerts recorded at the Hullabaloo nightclub in December 1965, onto which the sound effects were grafted.

This is the version I'd like to hear. I had a bootleg CD that had both versions Jan submitted and I could easily hear why Liberty rejected it. I'd prefer to hear a traditional 'as if sitting in the audience' live recording start to finish, but this is still better than not having it out at all.

I'm a little astounded that we've just gotten a brand new Jan & Dean album... previously unreleased, beautifully packaged and restored in stellar sound quality, and no one has yet seen fit to comment on it.

It's a crazy, daring record for the time, pre-dating Zappa, The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, The Monkees "Head," and Steve Martin's own brand of music and comedy.  For me, Filet of Soul is a relentlessy savage satire on the state of music and live performances circa late 1965, a delightful skewering of Beatlemania and a clever bit of self-satire, as Jan & Dean send up their own image.

The mono sound is crisp and punched up (The live Wrecking Crew sounds spectacular on Honolulu and Hang On Sloopy, in particular) and I'm hearing asides, sound effects and one liners I haven't previously heard on the muddy bootlegs.

The liner notes provide fascinating historical perspective on the hows and whys... I'm thinking the track "Thank You Dean" is when Jan decides to go into the audience?

The cripple joke appears in the shorter (2nd) version.  The released version is the acetate that Dean hand-delivered.

I'm really excited to have another Jan and Dean release and the sound quality is great. Cleaned up from an acetate I guess? There still sees quite a bit missing from various versions over the years but it is especially good to hear the clarity of the music - great arrangements and what a rhythm section!!

No credit given to the harmonica player!!

The idea of a comprehensive box set must still be an option????

I'm in the UK so haven't seen any reviews - I would be fascinated to hear how the album was received by someone who is new to it!!!!

The reviews have been mixed, as you would expect. Some have panned it completely while others appreciate it.

One thing I find interesting. What's the difference between Jan & Dean Meet Batman and Filet of Soul? Both were half music and half comedy. But for some reason Batman got released and Filet was rejected.
