Pepper box set, BBs '67 box set, J&D boxset?
« on: May 30, 2017, 07:12:11 AM »
The Beatles and The Beach Boys have both had the releases of major box sets including remixes and unreleased content.

It's really got me thinking that Jan and Dean need a 2017 box set! In my fantasy it would be all of their 50s-60s material in both original mono mixes and modern stereo remixes. Also all of the post accident stuff too. Unreleased content. That would be so great.

Yes, that would be awesome! But I don't think it will happen. Jan & Dean were not the Beatles and the Beach Boys, commercially. There just aren't enough people that would buy it. Complete Liberty Singles was a great package that actually sold very well. It was number 1 on the CC music chart for several months in 2008.

pet sounds to me,is the greatest album of all time. I have little time for pepper. So who would choose the track list for a box set? I d like to see all singles and album tracks up 1968,and another box set of jan berry solo material.

I'd love to get a 2 CD Jan & Dean set that covers 1958-68. 3 CDs would be ideal, but a 2 CD set is more commercially viable. The whole story from "Jennie Lee" through CARNIVAL OF SOUND, although a truly comprehensive set would demand some post 60s tracks, including "Don't You Just Know It", "How How I Love Her" and "Ocean Park Angel."

Inclusion of "Gas Money" also a must.

Yes, that's good. I think the entire 6 song Jan & Arnie career should be included. Also, a lot from early Jan & Dean. Those were very important songs to the development of California pop. They may have been top 100 nationally but they were top 10 in LA. Of Course, some were bigger nationally. The 60's stuff is a must. The 70's? I'd be satisfied with just a couple of songs. Maybe Sing Sang a Song and Fun City.

I've got a really nice 2 CD set from about 1996, "Jan & Dean all the Hits from Surf City to Drag City"    It has 25 songs on 1 CD + several "radio spots" and a "Merry Christmas" promo  Disc 2 has 26 songs with more promos.
Only 1 song from Jan & Arnie (Jennie Lee) and none of their later songs.
When I bought it, I was looking for "Popsicle". (One of the guys used to push that popsicle cart all over the neighborhood.)
Some of us "kids" from Jr. High were having our own little reunion (4 couples) and I was looking for music from then.
Then, I found it was a much later version of "Popsicle", I don't even know who did the original... doesn't matter, Jan & Dean are my very favorites.

I want it all. Jan & Arnie. Dore. Liberty. Post-accident. 70's. 80's. 90's. And maybe even some of the songs Dean recorded with The Bamboo Trading Company in the 2010's.

with jan and dean on different labels, how would we get a complete box set? It would be great to have all material on a box set, so what about jan and dean records, who owns them now?

FWIW I think Mother Earth is the best single Jan made after the accident, so I would have to see that :)

Here's an idea for a single CD Jan & Dean compilation. Haven't timed it yet, but I think all 28 songs are within the 80 minute time constraint. I opted not to go in chronological order. (Inspired by The Beach Boys' SOUNDS OF SUMMER and The Rolling Stones' 40 LICKS sets) This set gives the casual buyer every Top 40 hit yet much more, all on one disc. Timespan: 1958-67

 1) Jennie Lee (Jan & Arnie)  2) Gas Money (Jan & Arnie)   3) Surf City   4) Drag City   5) The Little Old Lady from Pasadena   6) Sidewalk Surfin'   7) The Anaheim Sewing Circle, etc   8) Ride the Wild Surf   9) She's My Summer Girl   10) Schlock Rod Part 1   11) Bucket T   12) Dead Man's Curve   13) The New Girl in School   14) Popscicle   15) Honolulu Lulu   16) Quasimoto   17) Baby Talk   18) Clementine   19) Heart & Soul   20) Linda   21) I Found a Girl   22) I Can't Wait to Love You   23) You Really Know How to Hurt a Guy (alternate longer version)   24) Like a Summer Rain   25) Yellow Balloon (Columbia version)   26) Fan Tan   27) (Here They Come) From All Over the World   28) Batman

Would a chronological approach better serve this material? Anything missing you'd like to see? Anything included you'd like to omit?

Good list, Moon Dawg, but I'd work "My Mighty GTO" and maybe "Hot Stocker" over the RAINY DAY/CARNIVAL tracks.

Good choices but I don't think there's enough room on one CD.
