DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: The 1977 Re-recordings.

You're right Mark.I had the Deadman's Curve album with the original hits. I also had Anthology. Those two were available after the movie along with greatest hits volume 1 and 2. So it wasn't all re-recordings,but like you said, there were a lot of them. I remember buying an album and hearing the re-recorded songs and just being bummed out. I started collecting nothing but originals shortly after. I have everything from Dore on through Save for a Rainy Day, including Pop Symphony. Collecting the originals was my only guarantee against buying more re-recordings.

I hate them. People think their music is fluffy because of those recordings. I wish Dean would have never done that. I'm not saying the sound is horrible.I just think the original recordings should be used always. Those recordings are not Jan & Dean. If the label says Dean Torrence or some other band name, then it's OK. But it hurts Jan & Dean's legacy for people to think those are original J&D songs.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: Why do you enjoy Jan & Dean?
« on: January 28, 2010, 07:19:32 AM »
First and foremost, the productions are great! But I also like the singing and the humor. I think a lot of people appreciate Jan & Dean music. More and more people are starting to hear the value. Almost every surf compilation I've gotten recently at least mentions Jan as a great producer. One surf CD I bought recently mentions the 2 Beach Boys songs(Surfin Safari and Surfin USA) as underproduced, but says Surf City and Ride the Wild Surf were great productions. Overall, however, Jan still doesn't seem to get his due respect with the historians that write books. That affects how people see Jan & Dean.Maybe Mark will change that.

Anthology was my first Jan & Dean collection. I absolutely wore it out. However, I have to give the Liberty Collection the edge because Anthology contained two covers of Beach Boy hits(????) instead of Jan Berry's 1965-66 productions.
How can you have other people's hits on your Anthology? and not include 2 top 30 hits from your catalog? But Dean did include some Filet of Soul on side 4 which was great!

I think Jan was referring to the fact that Jan & Dean were enjoying the wave. Jan didn't care what subject they sang about. Surfing music was in at the time, so that's what Jan & Dean did. The Beach Boys, on the other hand, were the ones that started singing about surfing. So it was more a part of their identity.

Jan's solo part on We Go Together is one of his best. I like Jan's voice on just about all of them

I have to disagree. I don't think Dean had a better voice than Jan.It was different. When they were live, I thought Jan was better. On TAMI, Jan saves it for them. Neither one were awesome vocalist, which is why I think Jan's production was so important. he made those records sound great even with average singers.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / favorite Dean vocal

I think some of my comments about Dean on earlier threads may have been misinterpreted. I know that without Dean, there was no Jan & Dean. His humor was a major contibution to the act, but also his vocal.I'd like to submit my favorite songs with some Dean vocal leads. Baby Talk, There's a Girl, Linda, The Restless Surfer, Summer Means Fun, Yesterday, Yellow Balloon, and Like a Summer Rain.

I agree!! I think Dean is a funny guy, that's all. He is responsible for a lot of the humor in Jan & Dean. I think his humor is one of his best contributions to the act. I'm not a huge fan of his productions. That's just the way I feel.

I'm sorry. I'm more interested in Jan, but I'd buy Dean's biography. I'm sure it would be funny!
