DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: 1966 concert

Good points Spazzatron. At the time, Jan & Dean should have been ahead of Sonny and Cher and Mama's if you look at chart success historically. But 1966 was in transition and Jan and Dean were on the wrong end of that. Popsicle was certainly an indication that they still had potential for chart success in 66. I would think a TV show promoting Fan Tan and Hawaii would have put Jan & Dean back in the top 20 or even top 10. Who knows. but judging from their strained relationship at the time, I really don't think they would have lasted much longer anyway.

Ok, I just found it in The Jan and Dean Record. April 5. Apparently, they were touring a lot. They had shows 3 or 4 nights in a row from Missouri to Ohio to Chicago. It was a Batman theme with the Markets.
What a life! Jan must've been miserable. All this and studying for Med School. and the kids were starting to lose interest. This had to be a tough period for Jan.

Someone posted on FB a story that he remembers a concert in April of 66. Jan and Dean with the Markets. He said only 100 people went. That surprises me. I know Jan and Dean were on a down turn right before the accident but they were only a year and a half removed from huge success and had a few top 30s in between. I guess kids had short memories back then

Fantastic!! Well I guess that answers my question. No doubt about it in my mind. There is a connection to Jan and Arnie(Dean) by using the main characters names as a Jan & Arnie / Jenny Lee reference. Thanks for sharing that Mark!

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / fun question about the movie "Christine"

I've watched this movie several times. But this weekend it played and I caught something I've never noticed before. For those of you who don't know, Christine is about a car that possesses it's owner. Whenever a 50's song plays, it commences killing someone or whatever. lol

It never plays a Jan and Arnie or Jan & Dean song, but the lead character's name is Arnie and he is dating Leigh (pronounced Lee).

Could that be the director or writers way of including Jan and Arnie (Jenny Lee)???

I think Jan had a reputation for doing it over and over again. With DMC, he went back and re-did the vocals for the hit version. Does that count?
it's funny you should use John Lennon. Hal Blaine said that Lennon used Jan's dual drum method in his recordings.

It's really no big deal. Dean always had good ideas and a great sense of humor. The reason I was curious is because I just recently realized that this was written during the Jan & Arnie phase. When you really listen, it sounds like a Jan & Arnie song(except for Dean's vocal of course) Listening to that 8 minute video really shows how talented Jan was very early on. For people to discredit his writing ability shows their ignorance of all the early songs he wrote before Surf City.

I guess Jan wanted to include Dean as writer in the beginning so it would be like he and Arnie. I'm sure Dean shared ideas and Jan credited him. But eventually, Jan attached himself to songwriters like Don, Artie, Brian, Roger, etc. Jan always gave credit to songwriters. He was very generous with that. Maybe to the point of diminishing his own songwriting legacy. But I digress lol

Another question and attempt to keep this board active. LOL In the video below, Jan Berry has clearly written Jeanette in 1958 for (I would assume) Jan and Arnie. It appears that Jan pretty much had this thing written before Dean came into the picture. So why did Dean get writers credit?

Thanks Mark. I just noticed that Bobby Darin's version(which does not resemble Jan and Dean's) was credited to Woody Harris as writer.

I'm curious as to why Jan & Dean got writers credit for Clementine. I know they may have changed some lyrics. But the music seems different too. It's the only rocking version of that song that I've heard.
Were they getting credit for changing the music too?

I'd love to see a release of all that stuff. and if those tapes from 1965 live exist, that would be great as well.
just so you know, most of the albums are available digitally. But there's not enough Jan & Arnie and early Jan and Dean. There's some, but we need more.
