Title: Favorite Jan vocal
Post by: David Beard on January 22, 2010, 08:19:59 AM
What about Jan? My favorites are the upbeat tunes where Jan has that — for lack of better term — vocal twang working…

For me, "One Piece Topless Bathing Suit," "Summer Means Fun," "Hang On Sloopy" and… "It Ain't Me Babe"

"Popsicle" is one of Jan's best leads.

Jan's solo part on We Go Together is one of his best. I like Jan's voice on just about all of them

This is hard! I agree that Ride the Wild Surf is a great vocal but can I add another rather unusual thought? Folk 'n' Roll has an uneasy reputation but includes some of Jan's best vocals - showing that he was capable of different styles. It Aint Me Babe is a real favourite - a great arrangement - a really tight rhythm, great drumming and great vocals. Unusual I know!

I'm gonna go with "Tomorrow's Teardrops". I just like that song. I think Jan had a bit of an older tone and he was trying to sing too.

I agree with Surferbee that Folk & Roll is a showcase for Jan's singing talent.  It covers all the bases: gentle ballads, rock & roll, and protest songs with mock angst. (I will also note that Dean does a great job on Yesterday and the duo sings great on Turn Turn Turn.)

Out of Jan & Dean's Top 40 era, I like "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena" and "Popsicle".

From the albums, Jan sings great on "Summer Means Fun" and "I Gotta Drive".
