DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: santa shut en down now

I remember hearing this song years ago and knew right away that the melody was Horace the swinging school bus driver. Actually, I think I even own this 45 with the picture sleeve, but couldnít find it after a long search. I was curious about the song writing credits and to my surprise, with the help of the internet, the credit went to Dickerson, lead singer and guitarist. I like the Untamed Youth a lot and have been listening to them since the early Ď90ís. Deke Dickerson is a phenomenal guitar player and used a Fender Jaguar that was popular with early surf groups. Carl Wilson played one on the first 3 or 4 Beach Boy albums. The Untamed Youth also covered J&Dís Surfiní Hearse from the Drag City album. I have no idea why Dickerson is the only name listed on this 45. He only changed the lyrics. The music wasnít his. In the mean time, Iím going to try and track down the 45. Curious to see what the writers credit says.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: Jan's best album cut production

I totally agree with Hot Stocker. This is one of my top 5 songs of J&Dís. Great production. Listen how it starts with those horns blasting. One Piece Topless Bathing Suit and 3 Window Coupe are right up there. A rarely mentioned song, which was a b-side and never made it on an album, is Freeway Flyer. The background vocals are top notch and the Wrecking Crew are at their finest.

DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: Jan Berry Biography

Thanks for the update Mark. Iím sure weíre all anxious waiting for your book on Jan. Now if only some Hollywood producer sees it and wants to turn it into a decent motion picture. Iím sure a bio on Janís life would be quite interesting for all, especially with the latest flicks about Brian Wilson, Freddy Mercury and Elton John.

Youíre right Positivemusic. How can I forget Murry. Iím sure Brian would have done the right thing for Mike, but Uncle Murry wanted to keep it in the family, even if Mike was his nephew.

On my way home from the beach yesterday(a little cooler down there with the sea breeze) I popped in my CD and blasted Drag City. I have to admit, I always liked this song better than DMC. And I like Hot Stocker even better than both of those. But Drag City is one powerful song. The background vocals are top notch and Jan delivers another stellar vocal. Listen to the end of the song when his voice gets deep ďgoiní to drag city runniní through nowĒ. What a great sound.

I remember when Michael ďDoc RockĒ Kelly interviewed Dean years ago in his Sunshine Music fanzine. Just as he mentioned in his latest book, Dean corrected a lot of the words to make more sense with the surfing lingo he was familiar with. According to him, collaborating and changing a few words in a novel like War and Peace is very insignificant, but not in a 2 minute and 24 second song with just a few lines in it. He should have received writers credit along with Berry and Wilson. Iím surprised that Jan wasnít that generous towards Dean. As for Brian, itís well known he omitted Mike Loveís name from many songs. Unfortunately, I guess weíll never know how much Jan or Brian wrote lyrically or musically. Thankfully, Dean knew to put in the proper surfing terms of that era.

Thanks for that info Mark. I guess itís been 36 years since I read Christine. I forgot that Stephen King included all the rock references.

I remember the movie and read the book also. The thing is, was the author Stephan King  a fan of both Jan & Arnie and Jan & Dean? Itís a long shot but who knows? He certainly grew up in that era, the 50ís and 60ís. I read almost all of his books since Iím a fan of horror movies.

Another one of the greats is gone. I remember being 9 years old and looking at the back cover of the Command Performance album and reading orchestra conducted by Hal Blaine. Thanks for being there for Jan & Dean as well as all those other great musicians. Your music will live on forever.

I was going to mention the same thing 1Jay1 wrote. This was when Dean first entered the picture and probably thought he had some ideas for Janís new song. Even if it was a word or two or proper grammar. Just a way of showing that he was the new partner now. I guess Deanís the one who can answer that for us.

Here's something I think we would all enjoy. A new movie about Jan & Dean released in the theaters. This time make it more accurate, including historical and visual. A few years before The Jan & Dean Record came out, I heard Mark Moore being interviewed on Sirius radio by a gentleman whose name I forgot. At the end of the interview, the subject of a movie was brought up once the new book came out. Maybe Mark's forthcoming new book on Jan will open some Hollywood producer's eyes. Keep your fingers crossed.

Actually, imagine both shows from Hullabaloo in December 1965. Just the way the audience heard it those nights without the sound effects that was later added for side 4 and the latest Filet of Soul cd. Next (in our dreams) would be a dvd of the complete concert from San Diego that we partially saw in On the Run. We can only hope!

« on: December 22, 2018, 07:40:05 AM »
Iím still waiting for my wish list. Do the Hullabaloo Show tapes still exists? According to Markís book, ten live songs were left in the can still waiting for all of us to hear. How about all the extra footage from the ďOn the RunĒ concert. Is that also sitting around in a can somewhere? What a treat that would be for all of us to listen and view this missing material fifty years later!

Good for you Dean! Now if only The Rock and Roll Hall of Shame, oops, I mean The Rock and Roll Fame can honor and nominate Jan & Dean once and for all!
