DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT / Re: what is the deal with Sidewalk Surfin
« on: November 19, 2018, 04:29:11 PM »
"Sidewalk Surfin'" is one of the best J&D singles.  The only reason "Honolulu Lulu" did better is because it was the follow up to a Number One smash - the world was waiting for it.

I don't think this had much potential for a hit. And I also don't think it would've been one.

Mark, or whoever knows this: is the author the same James Lott who played drums on one of Elvis' Sun recordings (I believe "I'm left you're right, she's gone")?

There's always an intangible element in whether a song becomes a hit, but anyone with ears should hear this song's potential.

One way or another, J&D are due for a new compilation. They should enlist Mark A Miller to assemble when/if the time comes. Although mine would do the trick as well.

I think you meant Mark A. Moore.

Agreed. Jan's vocal on the aternate take is better.

Good list, Moon Dawg, but I'd work "My Mighty GTO" and maybe "Hot Stocker" over the RAINY DAY/CARNIVAL tracks.

It's a great (slightly) trippy surf rock LP. True cult classic.

If Jan & Dean had continued - no accident 4-12-66 - then Dean should have been given more artistic expression via group projects. The RAINY DAY album proves he'd earned it. Perhaps in the form of the 3 or 4 cuts per J&D album when fitting into Jan's overall framework and concept.

Would Jan have gone for this? Nope.  ;D

Joan Baez is among this year's inductees. Yes, when I think "rock & roll", Ms Baez immediately comes to mind. (No offense, she is wonderful singer and fine guitarist.) So, Joan Baez is in while Jan & Dean, among others, are out. We can all thank a$$clown Jann Wenner.

I was so surprised that he didn't mention Save For A Rainy Day, as it's, in my mind, his shining moment as an artist.

Dean is all about the bottom line. The record didn't sell - being barely released - so why bring it up. It is a nice LP.

Greene's book is a fascinating look at life on the road for Jan + Dean in the 1990s. While reading I started to wonder if Jan had a personal assistant and/or medical adviser during these tours. Anyone know?

Gary Griffin comes off as a good guy. I recall seeing his name on the credits for M.I.U. Album by The Beach Boys - I won't hold that against him.  ;)

Miller comes off as a bit of a jerk, but his overall assessment of the Hall is correct.

Anyone know how many copies of the 1966 J & D Records pressing exist? I've heard they pressed about 30,000.

Little deuce coupe is killer, very underrated. Two thirds of new material but still great great cuts. J&d made four solid albums in 63/4 that sum up their output but w the BBs outta their two dozen albums half of em are phenomenal and NO other group in history had more than a few substantial albums.

What about The Rolling Stones? They made more than "a few" substantial albums too. The Beatles??
